RIO DE JANERIO, BRAZIL: A talented Samba dancer, who had undergone surgery for uterine fibroids in the hospital, discovered that her left arm had been amputated above the elbow when she awoke. After tests in August of last year revealed growths in her uterus, Alessandra dos Santos Silva, 35, a passista at the Academicos do Grande Rio school, was taken to the Hospital da Mulher Heloneida Studart in Rio de Janeiro in February.

Her arm couldn't be saved because it had gone necrotic, therefore, she had to have a total hysterectomy as a result of the operation's difficulties. Silva was discharged from the hospital following the amputation, but an examination a few days later revealed significant issues with her sutures. Before being admitted, the dancer was obliged to contact multiple hospitals.

The Heloneida Studart Women's Hospital incident will be the subject of an investigation by the Civil Police and the Rio de Janeiro Health Department into the succession of failures. The ballerina was taken to the Heloneida Studart Women's Hospital on February 3 for her initial uterine fibroids operation, according to g1. After being operated on in the morning, a hemorrhage was discovered that night, prompting the decision that she would require a total hysterectomy.

Silva's arm was nearly black

When the dancer's family members came to see her, they saw that her wrapped hands and legs were cold and that her fingers had blackened. Her family learned that she had to be moved to the State Institute of Cardiology Aloysio de Castro (Iecac) in Botafogo on February 6. According to family members, Ms. Silva's arm was nearly black at that point after being intubated, as reported by DailyMail. However, their attempts to preserve her failing limb fell short, and on February 10, her family was informed that she would pass away without being amputated. The liver and kidneys of Ms. Silva were failing.

Silva didn't realize her arm had been severed when she woke up. She was released on February 15, but physicians were highly concerned about the state of her stitches when she returned a few weeks later. On March 4, Silva was readmitted to the hospital, where she would remain for a month until being finally healthy enough to be released. The ballerina, who has been engaged for 11 years, admitted that she has always wanted to start a family, as reported by VimBuzz.

'They destroyed my work, my career, my dream'

She is unsure how she will support herself while dancing or working with one hand in beauty salons. Silva said, "I want those responsible to pay, for the hospital to take responsibility, because they managed to end my life. They destroyed my work, my career, my dream... everything," as reported by DailyStar. According to her family, she is only still alive because of her friends' tenacious efforts to get her back into the hospital.
