'Daddy sleeps while you cry': First-time mother's honest 4 am poem leaves Internet in splits
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK: A first-time mother left fellow parents in giggles with her honest 4 am poem that she composed for her husband, who enjoys his sleep while she takes care of their newborn at night. Caroline Olling Andersen, from Copenhagen, Denmark, shared her witty verse 'Daddy's Asleep' on Facebook, where it garnered immense attention due to its intensely relatable content.
In the limerick, the sleep-deprived mother, who also manages the parenting blog ‘The Mommy Poet’, bemoans that she has to wake up for the 4 am feed while her husband, whom she has not named, sleeps through. Andersen also clarified that she shares an extremely loving relationship with her husband but she wants her daughter to remember how he was sleeping when she stayed awake for her. The hilarious poem begins: "I love your daddy, I really do, After all, without daddy, I wouldn't have you."

'What's up, love?'
"But from midnight till sunrise, it's just you and I. And as each hour passes, I'm not gonna lie: Mommy's love slowly fades, becomes angry and weak, because no matter what, your dad is f***ing asleep!" she writes. Anderson then goes on to describe her futile attempts to get her spouse to wake up. "Mommy kicks him and pushes him angrily away. 'What's up, love?' He moans in a loving way. Your daddy has no clue he is under attack. He wraps his arms around me and kisses my back."
"And just as my love for daddy is back on the rise, You start to coo in your crib and open your eyes. And daddy gently nudges me to attend to your need. I give him the finger as I prepare for a feed," the poem continues. The frustrated mother also added, "Soon you'll grow up and be daddy's little girl. You'll not remember me cleaning up sh** and vomit hurl. Whilst you sit on his lap and he sings you a song, You'll love him and think daddy could do nothing wrong. But my sweet love, here is a poem for you to keep, So you know that all those long nights, dad was f***ing asleep!"
'Bottle would make a HUGE difference'
Anderson’s poem was an instant hit and was widely shared on social media. It was also shared on Reddit, where users applauded the mother for the relatable post. “It amazes me how we are both sleeping in the bed, but the smallest noise from the baby and I'm on it. Whereas the husband will sleep through normal crying into the screaming crying. Howwww?” one user wrote while another said, “I feel the bottle or breast would make a HUGE difference here.”
Following the post, Anderson described her partner as a "wonderful father" and said her decision to stay awake was mutual as she is on a maternity break while her husband needs good sleep for his tough teaching job. “Truth is, we made a deal during my pregnancy that I’d take the night shift because I’ve been blessed with long maternity leave. [This way] he gets to sleep so he can be ready for his 10-12 hour day teaching 10-year-olds. That said, tiredness will still cause you a lot of passive-aggressive feelings in the early hours at night – hence my poem, which was written at 4 am on a particularly tiring night,” she told Bored Panda.
