COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO: Colorado shooter Anderson Lee Aldrich has reportedly gone through a name change and identifies as non-binary, and uses they/them pronouns, it has been revealed. The public defenders for the suspect revealed the twist in a night court filing obtained by a New York Times reporter. The 22-year-old carried out a mass shooting on Saturday, November 19, on the eve of The Transgender Day of Remembrance at Colorado gay club, Club Q. Five people died in the attack, which is being investigated as a hate crime. 

Aldrich, who is in police custody at present, was tackled by at least two heroic patrons. Besides the five people who died, another 25 were injured. Aldrich had previously been arrested in June 2021 for a bomb threat, but they were never formally charged. Their name was originally Nicholas Franklin Brink, but they later changed it to Anderson Lee Aldrich in 2016. A petition was signed by his biological grandmother and stepgrandfather, and mother.

The petition was signed when Aldrich still identified as male. According to it, the name change was meant "to protect himself and his future from any connections to birth father", Aaron Franklin Brink. Brink is reportedly an ex-con former MMA fighter-turned-porn star. The 51-year-old has appeared on TV in 'Intervention' and 'Divorce Court'.

Brink reportedly began entering the mixed-martial-arts cage in late 1998. This was about a year and a half before Aldrich was born, according to the Denver Gazette. Brink had as many as 1 victory in the cage and 18 losses, including during appearances with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), MMA Junkie said in a profile.

Brink reportedly divorced Aldrich’s mom when their son was only a baby. He took up porn acting when he was 27, under the name Dick Delaware. Brink had a troubled childhood. He was put in juvenile detention and also had a federal prison stint for smuggling pot into the US from Mexico. At 24, he was released from serving a hard time. A friend asked him to consider MMA fighting. Aldrich's mother too has had a troubled past, with three current arrest warrants out for her in California. She has had previous busts, including for arson in 2012 in Texas. 

'I don’t believe this for a second'

Social media users expressed their shock at the new revelation, many of who believe Aldrich is lying to dodge hate crime charges. One user said, "I’m going to state the obvious so… bare with me. He could simply be mocking the “non-binary’s” with this declaration. Best to wait for more information." "He’s using the system to get out of the hate crime charges," said another. One user wrote, "I don’t believe this for a second. This is an evil, scheming way to get out of a charge for a hate crime".

"That's one way to get "hate crime" removed from the charge sheet I suppose," one user said, while another wrote, "If there’s no history on the claim, then it’s a very weak defense. They might have records to back this up. Otherwise the lawyers are ruining their reputations. I guess wait and see." One user wrote, "It's a defensive/proactive type of action the defense is doing in terms of any hate crime charges that will be brought against Aldrich. It's very transparent."
