But there were some who opposed their demand. A person noted, “We have better linebackers now than what Mattews is. Sure back in the day it would have been a yes but he doesn't play like he used to.” The second one remarked, “Yeahhh let’s waste money on a guy that will have zero impact on the field.” “Get the band back together and do a stadium tour like Aerosmith. If Rodgers and Cobb are team-building, I'd be more excited if they had unknown guys on the radar as opposed to washed-up guys from 6 years ago,” the third user added.

Clay was part of the Packers for his first ten NFL seasons. He soon proved himself by becoming one of the league's top edge-rushers, tallying 83.5 sacks across 143 games for the franchise, including four seasons with double-digit sacks. However, in 2019, the 35-year-old signed with the Los Angeles Rams, though the decision was reportedly not his own. At the time, describing his shock, he told Michael Silver of NFL.com, “I was kind of taken aback, because I thought I'd always be back there, whether it was at a cheaper price [or not]. So that was kind of a shock, because [my family] stayed out there and had our third child in the offseason, and I was hanging in town training there and everything. And yeah, that was kind of a surprise to me because I just figured I would be out there a few more years.” He also remarked, “People say, 'You chose to go to L.A.' I didn't choose. They told me there was no room for me." Though Matthews performed well with the Rams, he was released from the team last year. Since then, he remained a free agent.
