'Charmed' Season 2 Episode 2: Who the season's big bad Zagan "The Great" is and why he invokes a great villain from the OG 'Charmed'

In this week's episode of 'Charmed' we get a clue on who the big bad of the season will be as the writers take inspiraton from another facet of the original 'Charmed'

In this week's episode of the 'Charmed' reboot on The CW, we finally get to learn who the big villain of the second season might be. The showrunners had teased two overarching mysteries over the course of the season, and while one could involve dark Harry — the demon assassin — the other could be regarding Zagan "the Great". The name was mentioned during the demon party that Macy attends to rescue the witch they have captured. There, a demon says the demon overlord "Zagan the Great" will rise and that he has a big plan.

This gives us two key pieces of information: 1) dark Harry might be operating separately from the demons, and 2) the big villain the sisters will have to fight has been named. While we have only gotten the name of this greater demon, that's enough for us to dig a little further for more clues on this mystery villain.

This is where the OG 'Charmed' comes in. We wrote about the five villains from the original show that we would like to see in reboot — a la Parker being inspired by Cole, Phoebe's half-human, half-demon epic love. It looks like one of those predictions might be right. Barbas featured in multiple seasons in one-off episodes on the original show. A fear demon, Barbas was capable of manipulating those around them using their fears.

Barbas was one of many villains inspired by the 'Ars Goetia', a grimoire of sorts regarding demonology. The 'Ars Goetia' is a list of 72 really powerful demons who have the authority to exert control over Lucifer's other forces in hell. Besides Barbas, the other demons from this list that showed up as villains in the original 'Charmed' include Shax, Andras, Dantalian, and Asmodeus who was part of the Triad. Shax is the demon that killed the eldest Halliwell sister, Prue.

The writers of the reboot are following the path of the original show with Zagan "the Great". If one goes through the 'Ars Goetia', Zagan is a name that pops up as one of the greater demons and is described as a Great King and President of Hell and commands over thirty-three legions of demons. This is evoked in this week's episode when he is called the "demon overlord". According to the 'Ars Goetia', he can make men witty, turn wine into water, water into wine, and blood into wine. He is depicted as a  griffin-winged bull that turns into a man after a while.

We have not seen Zagan's face on the show yet and from the last minutes of the episode, we find out that he already knew that the Charmed Ones were not dead. Zagan could prove to be a formidable foe and we hope the writers work through him slowly, unlike the running through of the Source of All Evil and Parker storylines in the first. With Craig Shapiro and Liz Kruger heading the writers, and the first two episodes we have seen so far, we think the second season will have a stronger footing than the first.

New episodes of 'Charmed' airs on The CW on Friday nights.
