George Floyd protests: Cardi B urges people to vote to reduce police brutality, internet says she's 'dope'
Cardi B made the headlines on social media again. The singer recently posted a video on her Instagram page, where she presented her stance on the currently happening riots and protests all over the country in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
'The Bodak Yellow' singer captioned the video with a post that read: “Alil some some .....Like I said I don’t want to make everything political but ITS IMPORTANT! Stay Intune with local elections. #georgefloyd”.
"Seeing people looting and going extremely outraged, it makes me feel like, 'Yes! Finally! Finally motherf**kers is gonna hear us now. Yeah!' And as much as people is so against it, at this point I feel like I'm not against it," she begins her video, emphasizing that she doesn't want people to get hurt.
In the two minute video she can be seen saying, "It's really frustrating... police brutality been going on even way before I was born, but it has been more visual ever since social media started getting popping…I feel like I have done videos against police brutality, I feel like this is like my seventh time. I feel I've been doing police brutality videos ever since my teeth been f—ed up. And the only s—t that changed has been my f—ing teeth."
In the video, she also mentioned that protests “scare” her and she doesn’t want “anyone to get hurt.” She also urged people and her fans to vote for everyone who has authority. "And when I say voting I'm not only talking about the president. We could vote for mayors, we could vote for judges, and we could also vote for D.A.'s," she said.
This generated a lot of reactions and comments on both Instagram and Twitter. While some fans are in support of the music icon and her opinion on the situation, others had counter statements and comments on the same.
One user on Instagram said, “Wow you agree with ppl looting that doesnt surprise for sum reason you ignorant." Another fan, who thinks that Cardi B is relatable to her fans commented on Twitter saying: “Because she’s relatable. She doesn’t have the superiority complex just because she a celebrity. And it’s obvious that she actually gives a damn about people: She actually has an effective way of connecting with the everyday person. Dope”
“Ya’ll can say whatever you want about Ms. Cardi B, but what you can’t say is that she is uneducated. She does her homework and she remains informed. It’s really beautiful to see”, added another. Other comments followed in response to the hate posts on her video, like, “Cardi constantly speaks on police brutality when no other celebs will, yet she gets all the hate”.
“Sis!!!! I love you more and more EVERYDAY!!! This is how to use your platform to full effect!”
Countering her opinion in the video, a user on Twitter commented, “So why didn’t you guys vote? And why this condescending tone to rednecks @iamcardib? If you think of it, that is the conscious (or subconscious) decision of black ppl to stay divided from the white. It’s easier that way to be forever victims. You can always use it as excuse”
Cardi B posted this video on both Instagram and Twitter while in quarantine in her Los Angeles home. Floyd's death at hands of the police have generated a lot of interest among celebrities as well. With many names joining the fray to slam the unfortunate death, support the protests and highlight the inherent racist tones to the incident.
