Emails sent by Dr Anthony Fauci in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic has become a national talking point. The emails were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by BuzzFeed News and The Washington Post. They shed light on how authorities grappled with the pandemic in 2020, as the situation began deteriorating in the US. In light of these emails, the negative opinions about Fauci, which many conservatives hold, have been reinforced. One of these conservatives happens to be Candace Owens.

The Black American conservative author, talk show host, political commentator, and activist has demanded the arrest of the American physician-scientist and immunologist who serves as the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical advisor to the president. In a tweet, Owens wrote, “Firing Fauci does not go far enough. Anthony Fauci needs to be tried and put into federal prison. He ruined millions of lives via depression, bankruptcy, suicide, & preyed on children via school. He (and many others) have taken part in the crime of the century. We all knew it.”

Sharing a segment of her conversation with Fox News provocateur Tucker Carlson, Owens said on Twitter: “Factually speaking, black Americans are the most hesitant to get the Covid vaccine and with historical reason. The Department of Health once experimented on blacks via the Tuskegee experiment. Now the medical industry wants unvaccinated black people segregated in public spaces.”

She said in another tweet, “A few decades, the @nytimes, the academia & the scientific community wrote to justify racial segregation because black people were ‘biologically’ inferior to white people. Now the same group of people are once again using science to introduce the new Jim Crow.”

Many seem to agree with Owens. “Thank you for saying this Candace. Those that don’t know why you are saying it need to pay closer attention!” said a Twitter user, responding to Owens asking Fauci to be imprisoned. “He [Fauci] brought a nation to its knees for one purpose -- to feed his own ego,” said another. One Twitter user also said, “Amen!! This is what I say. Treason is what he committed along with many others, but most importantly Crimes Against Humanity, & they all deserve to be put in Guantanamo Bay.”

Scores more agreed with her call for arrest with more “Amens” and thumbs-up emojis. “Crime of the Century is absolutely what it is. It's time to stand up and hold them accountable,” said a Twitter user. Another said, “Fully agree, until people start being prosecuted for their crimes & corruption will we ever be able to stop whats  happening in our govt & country.”

But what did the emails reveal?

The 4,000-odd pages of emails published by BuzzFeed and the Post, CNN noted, illustrated Fauci’s hectic work schedule as he fielding dozens of questions every day, answering emails from team members, former colleagues, old friends, reporters, producers, celebrities -- “and sometimes strangers desperate for advice”.

But there are other aspects too. For instance, Fauci reportedly didn’t offer an opinion on the origins of COVID-19 when he was emailed in February 2020 by a professor concerned that the virus could have leaked from a Chinese laboratory. While he did respond to a note from the head of the National Institutes for Health on the same issue, Fauci’s response was redacted before the email was released to the media.

However, most of the emails relate to how Fauci worked with what information he had, which was continuously being updated based on what scientific experts and studies were saying about the virus and its spread, even as he managed a less than harmonious relationship with the Trump administration.
