The Davidsons come together to cheer Pete
At his home, Pete has dinner with Casey, his sister, and converses with his grandfather about the life that he’s willing to leave behind. Pete’s grandfather has one big piece of advice for him. He asks him to leave all his friends behind as they draw him back. He will never be able to recover from his addictions if he keeps the same set of friends around him. In a beautiful exchange, the family dances together, cheering Pete up. His grandfather reminds him to dance more often and, importantly, take Nikki, his on-off girlfriend, dancing at the first chance.
If not for his family, Pete would have ended up in a hellhole in some dump from where escape would have been impossible. When we see Pete promising his grandfather that he’ll make it in rehab, we know that despite all the odds, he will make way for a new self.
Pete believes he can kick his addiction
Pete and fellow comedian John Mulaney discuss Pete’s decision to enter rehab. John is extremely pleased but warns Pete that his bipolarity is a germ that refuses to die. He can enjoy a basketball game with his lady friends and at the very next instant call John to tell him he’s going to die.
This makes Pete realize that the battle to overcome his addiction is way tougher than he imagined. He takes Nikki dancing and after leaving the place, refuses to have sex with her, signaling he’s indeed trying to avoid all addictions. The older version of Pete would have taken Nikki right there in the car but the renewed version will work hard to overcome all addictions. Pete eventually goes to his friend’s house before heading to rehab and downs one last shot for old-time’s sake. When his friend asks whether he needs anything (drugs) to make his stay in rehab bearable, Pete is quick to reply, “Nothing.”
