Did Bryan Kohberger 'accidentally' kill 4 at Idaho home? Internet wonders if he 'planned' to attack only one

MOSCOW, IDAHO: The mystery of the killer behind the murders of the four University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, seems to be resolving after the arrest of 28-year-old criminology student Bryan Kohberger on December 30, 2022. But people are still wondering if there is a possibility the killings accidentally turned into mass murder.

Taking the conversation to Reddit, one user wrote, "I wonder if he only had one person in mind (ie Maddie) and everyone else was very unlucky in being in the ‘wrong place at the wrong time’. One theory from initial evidence is that he was stalking someone, having been near the house multiple times in the months leading up to the crime. Let’s suppose this was Maddie, given it’s her room he went to first. BK [Bryan Kohberger] for whatever sick reason decides he wants to kill her. He arrives at the house with his one victim in mind, but as fate has it Kaylee is in the same bed and not asleep in her own room so that’s one additional victim he’d not planned on." The user added by saying, "I just wonder if the other 3 victims were surprises for him. Many have speculated this can’t be his first murder, given he killed 4 at once, but perhaps this wasn’t how he’d intended it and it was an unfortunate turn of fate."

'It spiraled out of control'

Another said, "I also think he went there intending to commit one murder, and it spiraled out of control." The individual also pointed out the shocking revelation that the alleged killer returned to the scene hours after the massacre and wrote, "Given he returns to the crime scene roughly 5 hours later and then continues to go about his day with little sleep suggests he was still pumped up on adrenaline."

One more wrote, "I’ve been thinking that he may have not even gone in there with the intention to kill. Some stalkers just like to be in the homes of the people they are obsessed with. One of the girls woke up and once things started it just kept escalating."

'Sexual assault turned into murder'

Many called it a planned crime with one saying, "I wonder if it was even a planned murder. I think most likely yes. But I sometimes entertain the thought that it was just going to be a sexual assault."

Another user described, "I was wondering if it was a planned sexual assault that turned to murder. Perhaps he had been stalking the 'girl in the upstairs bedroom.' Regardless of who it was. Broke into assault with a weapon to intimidate, encountered both M & K [ Madison and Kaylee] and and just snapped. X & E [ Xana and Ethan] were collateral."

Kohberger, who graduated from DeSales University in Pennsylvania in May 2022 with a master of arts in criminal justice and is a PhD student in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University, faces four counts of first-degree murder for the brutal stabbings of four students. At a court hearing on January 3, 2023, Kohberger waived extradition as he agreed to be extradited from Pennsylvania to Idaho in his first court hearing. He is now being held on bail and will appear in court on January 12, as previously reported.
