'Black Lightning' season 3 will see the citizens of Freeland band together to rise up against a military takeover

A recent casting call for the series suggests the people of Freeland are going to take an active role in the upcoming war with Markovia. The show's producers are reportedly looking for actors to play the role of residents who rise up to free their city from military control.

After finally defeating Tobias Whale (Marcus ‘Krondon’ Jones III), you’d think the Pierce family would have a chance to rest easy in season 3. But the nation of Markovia has other plans for our heroes.

Markovia and their teleporting assassin, played by Tosin Morohunfola, were introduced in the second season of 'Black Lightning'. The season ended with Agent Odell (Bill Duke) recruiting Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning (Cress Williams) and his family to defend their hometown of Freeland from the country, who are planning an invasion with their own army of metahumans.

If the country is anything like its comic book version, Markovia won’t exactly be a tourist destination. In the comics, the country has a secret police, an authoritarian government and constant trouble with superpowered beings, even suffering an invasion in ‘Suicide Squad Most Wanted #1’ (2016).

A recent casting call August 13 suggests the people of Freeland aren’t just going to sit around while their home is being invaded. The show's producers are reportedly looking for men and women above the age of 35 to play the role of Insurgents, “residents of Freeland who band together to rebel against [the] military takeover.”

Black Lightning (The CW)

According to the casting call posted on Project Casting, ‘Black Lightning’ is looking to book background actors to work multiple days playing "Insurgents", "100 Members" and "Metas." For the Insurgents, the producers are open to actors of all genders and ethnicities above the age of 35. The actors are required to be okay with light running and the characters have been described as residents of Freeland who band together to rebel against a military takeover.

The show is also looking for African-American males between the ages of 20 and 50 to play members of the criminal gang the 100. The producers are looking for "tough/street types," preferably with prior experience working as a 100 gang member.

The producers are also looking to cast men and women between the ages of 18 and 45 to play the role of unidentified metahumans. The call is open to actors of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities, preferably everyday people who are okay with a little light running.

The appearance of Whale’s gang, The 100, and Meta-humans is something we’ve been expecting but the insurgency is something that could change things in the season. While the call does not make it clear whether the Insurgents are going to be allies or enemies of Black Lightning, we can assume they will probably stand with their resident hero.

Considering the sizable threat Markovia poses to Freeland, Jefferson is going to need an army of his own if he hopes to stand a chance of winning. While we don't know how strong an impact the Insurgents will have on the coming war, they just might be able to tip the scales in Freeland’s favor.

Right now, Jefferson is going to be willing to take all the help he can get if it means keeping his daughters China Anne McClain’s Jennifer Pierce aka Lightning and Nafessa Williams’ Anissa Pierce aka Thunder out of harm’s way.

‘Black Lightning’ season 3 will begin airing exclusively on The CW starting Monday, October 7 at 9 p.m. ET.
