President Joe Biden was trying to stress the gravity of the Capitol storming, which took place on January 6, by calling it the "worst attack" on democracy since the Civil War during his first address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, April 28. But he was heavily criticized by the conservatives on Twitter, who chose to remind him that there have been far worse attacks in American history.

"As I stand here tonight — just one day shy of the 100th day of my administration. 100 days since I took the oath of office, lifted my hand off our family Bible, and inherited a nation in crisis," Biden said. "The worst pandemic in a century. The worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War. Now, after just 100 days, I can report to the nation: America is on the move again. Turning peril into possibility. Crisis into opportunity. Setback into strength. Life can knock us down," Biden said. "But in America, we never stay down. In America, we always get up. And today, that's what we're doing: America is rising anew. After 100 Days of rescue and renewal, America is ready for takeoff. 100 days ago, America's house was on fire. We had to act."

The criticism of his speech poured out on Twitter fast. "January 6 was worse than 9/11? Or Pearl Harbor?" Glenn Greenwald, a journalist and former attorney wrote in a Twitter thread, in response to historian Michael Beschloss saying, "Joe Biden is absolutely correct in saying tonight that January 6 was 'the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.'"

Greenwald added in the following tweets, "Or the Oklahoma City bombing? Or the dismantling of civil liberties in the name of the Cold War and War on Terror? Or the mass surveillance program secretly and illegally implemented by NSA aimed at US citzens (sic)? Completely unhinged drama queen script to say that about Jan 6. How about the War on Drugs, mass incarceration and Jim Crow? Were those worse 'attacks on democracy' than the 3-hour Capitol riot on Jan 6? The assassination of JFK? The interference in domestic politics by the CIA? The list of worse attacks than Jan 6 is endless."

Trump advisor Jason Miller tweeted: "Worst attack on our Democracy since the Civil War? Not 9/11? Not Pearl Harbor???" Radio host Mark Simone wrote, "Biden: 'January 6th was the worst attack on our Democracy since the Civil War.' Has this idiot really never heard about Pearl Harbor or 9/11, not to mention the burning down of courthouses and police stations all over America by his supporters? #BidenAddress #JointAddress".

Washington Times columnist Tim Young commented, "January the 6th wasn't anywhere near a civil war... However, ANTIFA's months-long riots and claiming of autonomous zones are."

Conservative pundit Ben Shapiro remarked, "He should know better than this, considering he's old enough to remember all the intervening events since the Civil War." Washington Examiner Justice reporter Jerry Dunleavy wrote: "9/11 was an attack on our democracy. Flight 93 was headed for the U.S. Capitol, and if not for the brave actions of those on board, it's very possible the building would've been a smoking crater. Instead, it crashed in a field ~20 minutes from DC, & all 40 passengers & crew died," adding in another tweet, "The Capitol riot was very bad. Let's get serious about American history tho."
