First Lady Jill Biden was the talk of social media after she attended the joint address to Congress by President Joe Biden. But it probably was for all the wrong reasons. At first, social media users applauded her and the beauty of the dress she was wearing. But it was soon pointed out that Jill had actually the same dress in a different color on the night of Biden's inauguration.

When accompanying the president at the Capitol, Jill was seen wearing a dark navy blue or black version of the same cream evening dress she wore after her husband entered the White House in January 2021.

Jill Biden's white Gabriela Hearst inauguration concert dress was adorned with flowers from every US state

First lady Jill Biden waves as she arrives for the speech by U.S. President Joe Biden to a joint session of Congress in the House chamber of the U.S. Capitol April 28, 2021 in Washington, DC. On the eve of his 100th day in office, Biden spoke about his plan to revive America’s economy and health as it continues to recover from a devastating pandemic. He delivered his speech before 200 invited lawmakers and other government officials instead of the normal 1600 guests because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. (Getty Images)

The dress by Uruguayan designer Gabriela Hearst, who is popular in fashion circles for making use of recycled material in her designs, quickly made headlines as its floral embroidery, sheer overlay and a matching navy mask gave Jill a praiseworthy look.

At first, people were confused if it indeed was the same dress and design. Some social media users were ruthless in their criticism of Biden as many passed sarcastic remarks and critique about the dress and the fact that she had chosen to wear a similar kind of dress on two important occasions.

"Is Jill Biden wearing that same dress with the flowers of all 50 states? Or is this a new version?" one user asked. "Jill Biden could wear a potato sack and the swooning libs and media would still say she looks amazing. They didn't even notice she's wearing the same dress in a different color," another tweeted.

At the same time, some social media users mocked those giving it so much attention. "It is a beautiful fresa [dress] and a beautiful Lady! Let her live!" one tweeted. Another user taunted, "Dr Jill Biden wears clothes," with an eye-roll emoji.

And fans continued showing her support. "Biden speech clothing critique continues. Maxine Waters is rocking it in her outfit. She looks fabulous I give her the win for tonight. Enjoying Jill Biden's dress and wish that she and I almost the same age could both wear that dress and look good." Another user tweeted, "So, yeah, it’s a presidential address to a joint session of Congress and using it as a look book is totally missing the point, but I want Jill Biden’s dress anyway."

So now the question arises: how come Jill Biden wore the same dress in a different colour? It could be attributed to the fact that Hearst might just have impressed Jill so much with her art and fashion that the first lady couldn't help it at all. When she designed the inauguration dress, Hearst spoke about the embroidery that featured the federal flowers of every state and territory in the United States. "The Delaware flower is positioned at the heart level of The First Lady, from there, all the other flowers branch out. The pieces were made entirely in New York City," the 44-year-old designer stated. Perhaps it was this attention to detail that impressed Jill Biden. There is also the fact that the two share their commitments to using recycled fabrics and sustainable practices.
