The sixth and final season of ‘Better Call Saul’ is slowly inching toward its conclusion and naturally, the level of devastation is also increasing with each passing episode. The mid-season premiere saw the shocking death of Lalo Salamanca and the last week’s episode broke everyone’s hearts as Kim (Rhea Seehorn) and Saul got separated. It was really difficult for everyone to deal with that kind of tragic event because Kim was an integral part of Saul’s life. As of now, it seems we have seen the end of Kim’s storyline in the AMC series because she doesn’t appear in the ‘Breaking Bad’ universe.

However, tonight’s episode saw Saul Goodman living a new life as Gene Takovic. Yes, you heard it right. The most part of today’s episode showed Saul’s life after the events of ‘Breaking Bad’ and is now managing the Omaha Cinnabon. But, he hasn’t stopped doing suspicious things and has some people to help him as well. Saul’s life has been really interesting and he changed places to do a lot of shitty things, but he was smooth in doing them that you loved how extraordinary this guy is.

This season has been all about extraordinary writing. Well, all previous seasons have been exceptional as well, but this season’s writing has been on a different level. Even a filler episode felt like we are seeing pure art and we are so invested in everything that was happening on the screen that we don’t even want to blink because we know that we are going to miss something important. The episode, titled ‘Nippy’, was important for Gene’s closure and it seems we finally got that.

He made sure to tell his helpers that they were “done” and told them to never come back. Even when he is out of that life, he was not able to leave everything back at Albuquerque because that’s who he is. He is not your “oh so honest” lawyer. He will do anything and everything to accomplish his task and Season 6 is a testament to everything he has done to be at the top of the food chain.

There might be some people who might not like the episode because it deviated from the storyline completely. In last week’s episode, we saw Jimmy completely transitioning into Saul Goodman, but we never got to see what he did after that. Instead, we moved into the future and we are seeing what happened with him after ‘Breaking Bad’ ended. He even talked about Walter White and referenced him as a Chemistry teacher who walked into his office with nothing and a year after, he had so much money that he couldn’t even kept in his Volkswagen truck.

But ‘Nippy’ was all about Bob Odenkirk showing his brilliance and showing why deserves to win that Emmy. He carried the entire episode on his shoulders and gave one of the most intense performances in the show’s history. The scene where he makes up the story about him having “no one” in his life and distracting the police officer was absolutely mesmerizing. A department store robbery gave Saul’s alter ego a way to slide into the life he left behind in Albuquerque.

In Season 6, we have seen a lot of closures. Nacho died unexpectedly. So did Lalo and last week, Kim decided to walk away because she was losing herself in everything that was happening. So, it doesn’t come as a shock that tonight’s episode gave closure to Gene’s story as well. Now, we don’t know if it’s a Happy Ending or not, but it’s certainly an ending that he can live with.

All in all, the episode might be a little different than what we have seen this season, but the intensity never took a drop. Shot in black-and-white, ‘Nippy’ showed that you can change your name but you’d still remain the person who you were from the beginning, and Jimmy might be calling himself Gene now, but we know who he is. He is Slippin’ Jimmy.

'Better Call Saul' Season 6 returns to AMC with a new episode every Monday at 9 pm EST.
