Hate crime or vigilante justice? Video shows Asian man being pummeled for allegedly assaulting woman
Warning: This article contains distressing footage
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A disturbing video has surfaced over the weekend which involves an Asian man getting beaten up by a bunch of subway passengers. The video, which appears to be filmed at the Fulton Street station, shows three men attacking an Asian passenger as two of them assault him and one holds him right up. One man is seen slapping the victim while the other delivers some hard-hitting punches to the head.
The bystanders can be seen cheering the assault while the Asian man seems unconscious after the first attack. The video was shared on May 28, 2022, and there is no concrete explanation that can justify the rage that is seen pouring down on the victim. However, the caption says that he was allegedly trying to rape a girl on the train and that these 'good citizens' pulled him off the train, although this is unconfirmed.

Hate crime or vigilante justice?
The video in question has been reviewed by the Asian Crime Report's Twitter account and retweeted by the NYPD Asian Hate Crime Task Force. Meanwhile, some have claimed that they were at the scene and that the Asian man was the one who stopped the black men from harassing a girl. According to these claims, the Asian man was framed for it and later beaten up to make their story more believable. On the other hand, some maintain that the blame lies on the Asian man.

New York City has seen a slew of hate crimes of late. In fact, according to the New York Post, the city saw a whopping 1300 percent rise in anti-Asian violence in 2020 alone. The coronavirus pandemic has added to the problem as there have been several incidents where Asians were blamed for the 'China Virus.' In 2021, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio introduced P.A.T.H. (Partners Against the Hate), which aims at protecting Asians and Jews, with a funding of $3 million. However, it is as yet unclear if the initiative has yielded concrete results.
