'Apex' Movie Review: Bruce Willis shines in this average action flick
In recent years, we have seen Bruce Willis in various action movies that have done really bad at the box office and were panned by the critics as well. I mean, let’s be honest he is way over his prime and the movies he’s doing right now are just for being relevant because none of his recent movies have managed to capture the minds of audiences.
His recent movies ‘Breach’, ‘Glass’ did not receive much love from fans and people are hoping to get a better movie from the veteran. The veteran’s latest film ‘Apex’ has finally been released on VoD and it seems he was really close to getting a good movie this time around. The film revolves around a man named Thomas Malone (Bruce Willis), who is behind bars for the last seven years and he has broken many, killed so many people that he has forgotten what feelings are. On the other hand, we have a hunter called Samuel Rainsford (Neal McDonough) who hunts people for his enjoyment and takes them as a trophy. He is known to be the best hunter in the world.

So, if Thomas wants to walk free then he needs to play a game called ‘Apex’ at the Apex Island. During the game, he will be hunted by six hunters and if he manages to stay alive then he gets his freedom.
The concept of the movie is really fresh and it could have been made into a spectacular action flick. However, when the movie ends, it just comes out like any other action movie. All six hunters know each other and have worked in the past. But, this time, they are meeting a prey that might be superior to them and he had a plan of turning them against each other and winning the game. For a few minutes of the movie, they try to work as a team but they turn against each other rather quickly.
My main objection to the movie’s story is that everything happens too quickly. You have an action icon in your movie and all the action scenes you have with him are in the last 15-20 minutes of the movie. Also, if you are not thinking of showing his face while shooting then why did the director even think of taking Willis in the movie. Another thing that bothered me while watching the action flick is that the story makes Rainsford a supervillain, but when the time comes to show his real badassery then he falls flat.
As far as acting is concerned, Bruce Willis is good as Thomas Malone. But, he should seriously think about if he wants to be in another movie or not because if he keeps on doing such movies then he might retire as someone who people don’t care about and that would be a travesty for a legendary actor like Bruce Willis.
On the other hand, Neal McDonough looks menacing as the villain but ends up being so disappointing due to lazy writing. Megan Peta Hill has a smaller role, but she is indeed the brightest talent. Also, Alexia Fast is amazing in her role as well.
All in all, the movie could have been much better than it already is. But, it isn’t a bad watch, you can certainly enjoy some parts and they leave you wanting more.
