As football fans and athletes all over the US mourned beloved NFL coach and former broadcaster John Madden on December 28, one woke Texas professor decided to do the exact opposite. The day Madden died, professor Andrew McGregor put out a tweet saying Madden and his widely popular NFL computer games "glamorized violence and dehumanized Black athletes."

McGregor joins a long list of professors who have now gone viral for their rather controversial opinions. Columbia professor Brian Kahn went viral in 2020 for calling the Rockefeller Christmas Tree a "toxic" symbol and calling for it to be canceled. During the 9/11 anniversary in 2021, Syracuse University prof Dr Jenn Jackson called the tragedy "an attack on the heteropatriarchal capitalistic systems." Then in October 2021, Brittney Cooper of Rutgers University went viral for calling White people "villains".

In almost all cases, the "woke" professors have had their views condemned and slammed, as well as faced calls to be sacked. While few universities have taken that extreme step, it's unclear if Dallas College will do so following the storm McGregor has brewed. Even though he's since locked access to his Twitter account, a screenshot of his tweet is now circulating as social media bashes him for his poorly-timed tweet.

Who is Andrew McGregor?

McGregor's Linkedin profile lists him as a professor of history at Dallas College's Mountain View Campus. "I am also the faculty sponsor for the Mountain View Campus History Club," he adds about his work at the institution. In May 2014, McGregor also founded the 'Sport in American History' blog, which he describes as "an interdisciplinary blog on sports history and studies."

Before joining Dallas College in January 2020, McGregor taught at Texas A&M University, Purdue University, and the University of Nevada, Reno. He obtained a BA and MLA in history from Baker University, before obtaining an MA from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2011. McGregor also has a Ph.D. from Purdue. We could learn little else about McGregor since he appears to have taken down his personal website as well as locked his Twitter account.

From his LinkedIn profile, it appears McGregor is also a columnist for The New York Times and The Washington Post. However, it appears all his insights have now taken a backseat, with McGregor firmly becoming known as the man who "spit of Madden's grave" for tweeting, "I have lots of opinions on John Madden. The creation of the Madden video game was not a great
development for the U.S. It further glamorized violence and dehumanized Black athletes, helping to establish plantation cosplay that has grown worse in the era of fantasy football."

McGregor dubbed 'biggest villain of 2021'

Responding to that tweet, one user said, "Got to hand it to Andrew McGregor, not only did he get is tweet in just in time for Worst tweet of the year, but damn he tweeted top 5 worst tweet in Twitter history." Another commented, "Andrew McGregor sent one of the most terrible tweets of all time and managed to unite the left and right into dunking on him." One user tweeted, "Dr. Andrew McGregor’s Madden take is living proof that being a doctor shouldn’t imply you’re smart. Unless you start developing your abilities to think for yourself, you’ll always be useless to society. Doesn’t matter what sheet of paper a college awards you."

"Dr. Andrew McGregor is absolute douche bag. John Madden has more respect throughout the country and the football world than you. What have you done for the country?" one user asked. Another user mocked, "Thank you, Andrew McGregor! We needed a new Twitter villain. Love when everyone can come together and agree that one person’s takes are objectively terrible." One person remarked, "Dr. Andrew McGregor comes out of NOWHERE to take the crown as the biggest villain of 2021. Truly astonishing."
