Former Miss America Betty Maxwell had an interesting run on Season 20 of ‘American Idol’ till the duets round aired on April 3, 2022. However, the beauty queen ran out of luck as she failed to impress the judges in the latest episode of the singing reality show aired on Monday, April 4, 2022. The 27-year-old crooner had performed ‘The Joke’ by Brandi Carlile on the showstoppers episode but unfortunately could not make it to the top 24 and her episode also did not air on TV.

Maxwell then took to her Instagram account to narrate her side of the story. “So now you know what I’ve known for months. Although I didn’t make it into the top 24, I’m so incredibly thankful for the journey. This entire experience has been life changing for me”, said the motivational speaker adding, “I made amazing friends, I pushed myself in ways (when I was sick and exhausted) that I didn’t know I could and sang my heart out….but most importantly I got to show the judges and the world, my heart. I love you all and I can’t thank you enough for always loving and supporting me.” Maxwell added, “During my final judgement, the judges told me they loved me for my heart and kindness which meant more to me than anything else they could say.”

Before getting evicted from the show, Katy Perry told Maxwell, “I heard something recently…that it’s better to be kind than to be smart, because you can be born smart but you have to choose to be kind. And that’s you, Betty”. Maxwell in her Instagram post further shared, “I was nearly in tears hearing her say that. But they went on to say that my voice just sounded too broadway and that’s not what they’re looking for on American Idol. I totally understand their decision, but hopefully I did get the attention of someone who is looking for a voice like mine… @disney.”

‘You got it so wrong’

Social media users were disappointed and angry over the judges’ decision to evict Maxwell from the show. “Wanted Betty to go through, but wishing her the best of luck!”, said one user as another posted, “How is Betty Maxwell going home!? She has a phenomenal voice, so much stage presence, & is an absolute gem of a human! I’m shattered. No disrespect, but she deserved the Top 24 over literally 1/2 of them. This is why I usually don’t get this invested.” The next one posted, “You got it so wrong! How could you not put Betty Maxwell through to the top 24? SMH.” One person added, “Y’all crazy for not putting Betty Maxwell in the top 24!! She has a fantastic voice!” And, another stated, “Betty Maxwell didn’t make it OMG she was so good”, as another concluded, “Betty was a ray of sunshine and Im sad she didnt go forward.”
