Pledge vs Donate proved to be the hottest debate in Johnny Depp’s case against Amber Heard in their latest hearing on Monday, May 16 after the latter admitted to failing to pay her pledged $3.5 million donation to the ACLU. The ‘Aquaman’ actress claimed that it was Depp suing that kept her from paying the entire $7million divorce settlement.

Amber Heard like always quickly grabbed one of the top spots on Twitter as social media users grilled her over arguing on pledge and donation. In 2018, during her appearance on the Dutch TV show ‘RTL Late Night’, Heard had claimed that she split the divorce settlement amount between the ACLU and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles’. Heard now told the court she failed to pay her end of the deal because Depp sued her for $50 million in March of 2019. Heard said, "I fully intend to honor all of my pledges. I would love for him to stop suing me so I can."

Is Amber Heard the inspiration behind Snapchat's new crying filter? Company responds

Depp's lawyer Camille Vasquez while cross-examining Heard asked her: "You have all the 7 million dollars for 13 MONTHS before Mr. Depp sued you and you CHOSE NOT to pay it to charities you pledge it to. Is that correct Ms. Heard?" "I pledged the entirety," insisted Heard in reply. "I used pledge and donate synonymously," the actress replied in explanation and Vasquez replied in comeback "I don't."

When Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft asked why she accepted a $7 million settlement from Depp, she stated, “I didn't care about the money. I was told if I didn't agree to a number it could be overturned, we would never settle. I took far less than what they were offering and what I was entitled to.” The 36-year-old Hollywood biggie asserted that she donated the money to charity because she was “never interested in Johnny's money” adding “I wanted my safety and my future and he compromised that….I wanted him to leave me alone. I've been saying that since 2016.”

Terence Dougherty, the ACLU Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, testified earlier that so far only a total of $1.3 million has either been donated by Heard or on her behalf. Of that, Heard contributed $350,000 directly in December 2018 and she has not paid any money since. $100,000 was paid by Depp and another $350,000 came from a fund at Fidelity, an investment company.  Another $500,000 payment came from an account at investment firm Vanguard, which Dougherty said he 'believed it was a fund set up by Elon Musk. Heard said she selected the ACLU as an organization for funds because she believed in its mission, and the Children's Hospital because she had volunteered there for more than a decade and knew it could use the funds. When asked by her lawyer in direct examination whether the donations had a deadline, Heard said, "There are none. they understand."

‘Pledge and donate are not the same word’

On the other hand, social media users severely trolled  Heard for failing to make the payment. “Amber Heard needs to use a dictionary and find the definitions of the words "Pledge" and "Donated". They are not the same. Perjury is illegal, yes? Camille proved AH lied under oath in the UK. AH admitted today that she didn't pay the money to charity. Such a liar”, said one user as another posted, “Amber Turd is not winning points with the jury by pretending that "pledge" and "donate" mean the same thing. Every member of that jury knows, you may "pledge" $20 to your neighbour's kid's fundraiser but until you actually fork over the $20 you have not "donated.”

The next one shared, “So Amber Heard didn't donate a single penny. And wants everyone to believe that a pledge is an actual donation. That's ridiculous.”. One user posted, “If Amber Heard refuses to say there is a difference between "pledge" and "donate"...just wait til we get to "punch" vs "hit". Buckle up!” And, another stated, “Go ahead Amber, keep insulting the intelligence of the jury with the meanings of donate and pledge.” One individual concluded, “Pledge and donate are not the same word, Amber Heard. As you damn well know. You are trash that LIED about donating money to sick kids because you wanted to look like a good person. Which you’re not.”
