#AbolishTheMonarchy trends after Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah, Amanda Gorman hails her for her strength
Meghan Markle's and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey aired over the weekend and included some bombshell reveals, in which Markle spoke about her deep struggles during her time with the royal family. Markle and Harry also revealed disturbing discussions in the palace about their son's skin color. The revelations even triggered a hashtag — #AbolishTheMonarchy
During the interview, Markle also reflected on her "suicidal thoughts" while living there, saying, "That was a very clear and frightening thought, I couldn't be left alone." She also confessed that she did not receive any help from the royal family in her dark days -- when she went to 'The Institution' to be asked to be checked into a hospital, she was told it would not be good for optics and was shrugged off.

Markle's and Harry's tell-all interview has gotten everyone talking, including poet and activist, Amanda Gorman, who was the first person to be named the National Youth Poet Laureate. Gorman took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the interview. Soon after her tweets, 'AbolishTheMonarchy' started trending.
She tweeted, "Meghan is living the life Diana should have, if only those around her had been as brave as she was. Meghan isn’t living a life without pain, but a life without a prison." She added, "This isn't Meghan's princess ‘happy’ ending. But sometimes change, the decisions that bring us the most hurt, aren't about happiness, but healing." She also wrote, "Unclear if this will change the Royal family, but Meghan's strength will certainly redefine family everywhere. Think of the women who will be inspired to stand up for their lives, the partners who will be kinder & more courageous than the kin they were born into."

Gorman also tweeted, "Meghan was the Crown's greatest opportunity for change, regeneration, and reconciliation in a new era. They didn't just maltreat her light--they missed out on it."

However, not many agreed with this sentiment with some taking to social media to opine that an institution that has existed and perpetrated racist acts for centuries would not be changed by one woman, but rather needed to be abolished completely.
One user tweeted, "There is no reforming that ancient racist institution thriving off genocide and theft of half of the world. Their former colonies are struggling with poverty due to their greed. Abolish it." Another wrote, "Not this celebrity poet thinking anything good can come out of the Crown abolish that shit." Another wrote with a meme: "Live look at the people defending the Royal family after the Oprah interview #AbolishTheMonarchy". While yet another went on to write: "Racism is the foundation of the royal family's accumulation strategy, not an aberration. Racism is why they sit on their millions in wealth, gold & jewels looted from Black & brown peoples today. #RacialFeudalism #AbolishTheMonarchy". Even Piers Morgan was using the hashtag: "So, #AbolishTheMonarchy is now trending, albeit below me. Congrats Meghan & Harry - your mission is complete."

A user opined, "The monarchy has been around for centuries. This one scandal is not what’s about to bring radical change. The empire won’t just collapse cause of this." Another wrote, "What part of they hate n****s don’t y’all understand Not y’all trying to be an asset to a colonial institution instead of wanting to destroy it." A user opined, "y’all think accepting Meghan would be enough to offset the generational evils of the Crown???"
