Author Alice Sebold finally broke her silence on the rape controversy and apologized to Anthony Broadwater on a Medium post. In 1981, the bestselling author identified Anthony Broadwater as the person who raped her, leading him to spend 16 years in prison. Decades later, his conviction was overturned after a Netflix producer brought forward the truth - Broadwater was in fact wrongly identified. In the meantime, Sebold ended up making millions through her book 'Lucky', a memoir of the rape.

Following immense criticism, the 58-year-old author of 'The Lovely Bones' and 'The Almost Moon', expressed her regret in naming Broadwater decades back. "First, I want to say that I am truly sorry to Anthony Broadwater and I deeply regret what you have been through. I am sorry most of all for the fact that the life you could have led was unjustly robbed from you, and I know that no apology can change what happened to you and never will. Of the many things I wish for you, I hope most of all that you and your family will be granted the time and privacy to heal," she wrote in the statement.

What is Alice Sebold's net worth?

Alice Sebold's bestselling book 'Lucky', published in 1999, narrates her traumatic experience of being raped and beaten by a Black man. The sexual assault reportedly took place in a tunnel near Syracuse University, where Sebold was a student of 18 years at the time. The memoir sold over one million copies worldwide, where she identified Anthony Broadwater as her rapist. However, after he falsely served 16 years in prison, Netflix producer Tim Mucciante found serious discrepancies in Sebold's memoir. He hired a private investigator to look into the case, and later the case was reopened in court. In 2021, a judge found several problems with the initial conviction and exonerated Broadwater.

Over the past sixteen years, Alice Sebold gained considerable success as an author, with her memoir 'Lucky' hugely contributing to the same. She started off as a waitress in Manhattan but soon became a full-time author. At present, her net worth has been estimated to be around $1.4 million by Idol Net Worth. She is married to fellow writer Glen David Gold and resides in California with him.

In her apology statement, which was privately sent to Broadwater before being released publicly, Sebold said that she "will ... grapple with the fact that my rapist will, in all likelihood, never be known, may have gone on to rape other women, and certainly will never serve the time in prison that Mr. Broadwater did."

Broadwater himself responded to Sebold's apology, confirming that he accepts it. "It comes sincerely from her heart. She knowingly admits what happened. I accept her apology," he stated, adding, "I'm relieved that she has apologized. It must have taken a lot of courage for her to do that. It's still painful to me because I was wrongfully convicted, but this will help me in my process to come to peace with what happened.'
