WALTERBORO, SOUTH CAROLINA: The Murdaugh family farm in South Carolina has officially closed more than three weeks after Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife, Margaret, and son, Paul. The farm has been in contract since last summer and it has been reported that a couple of local farmers teamed up to purchase the massive 1,770-acre site where Margaret and Paul Murdaugh were brutally killed.

James Ayer, 43, and Jeffrey Godley, 49 were responsible for paying for eight tracts worth $2.66 million of the property which was sold for $3.9 million in total, according to the New York Post. Godley also owns a heating and air conditioning service business and other farms in the community. Ayer told the outlet that they were not sure what would they do with the property at this time. The outlet has further confirmed that even Alex’s older son, Buster, is expected to receive $530,000 from the $3.9 million price tag.

The clients of Mark Tinsley, the attorney who worked with Murdaugh’s clients, will receive around $2.68 million from the sale along with the legal counsel of Renee Beach as Personal Representative for the Estate of Mallory Beach, Morgan Doughty, and Miley Altman, who are each involved in civil suits arising from Paul’s fatal 2019 boat crash.

Are the new owners connected to the Murdaugh family?

Todd Crosby, the real estate agent who held the listing, told the outlet that the new owners have no connection with the Murdaugh family and that the sale was paused until all the family’s personal belongings inside the home were cleared out.

The recent auction of Alex Murdaugh's home

An auction took place in Pembroke, Georgia on Thursday, March 23, where hundreds of items from inside the home were sold to the highest bidders. The furniture received bids worth thousands of dollars from the bidders. The couch where Alex claimed he took a nap on the night of the murders sold for $36,000, according to CourtTV. Unique turtle lamps from the home also sold between $500 and $800.

Alex allegedly conspired to hire a hitman

The home was formerly listed in March 2022, just five months after Alex allegedly conspired to hire a hit man to kill him so that he could leave his only surviving son, Buster, a $10 million life insurance policy. Murdaughs’ longtime housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, 57, also died on this property on February 26, 2018, in what was described as a slip-and-fall accident. The housekeeper had worked for the Murdaughs for more than 20 years.

“The next owner may be the beneficiary of considerable tax advantages that may be available through the donation of an easement,” the previous listing says. “This is truly a top-tier property, complete with all the improvements and amenities one would expect from a high-end sporting property with little or no deferred maintenance cost.”

Murdaugh's ultra-luxurious farm

The property, also known as the Cross Swamp Farm which borders the banks of the Salkehatchie River, offers a wide range of natural amenities including freshwater fishing, kayaking, and more than 2 miles of river frontage along with abundant deer and turkey, says the listing. Besides, there are two man-made waterfowl reservoirs planted with corn to attract birds and a 20-acre dove field with a dead wire and parameter fencing to minimize crop damage.

The custom-built main residence, which is 5,275 square feet, is made up of four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms and features a new metal roof, HardiePlank siding, and refinished heart pine flooring throughout. There is also a 1,140-square-foot guest cottage, an equipment shed, and an equipment wash-down station.

'People are gross'

Twitter users also reacted to the news of the bidders buying several of Murdaugh's belongings in the auction. One user tweeted, "Ok. Fed funds rate indeed needs to go to at least 30%." Another wrote, "Check them cushions for baggies of pills. Lol." One user called out the bidders by saying, "These people are all sick and disgusting. It’s like a knife in the back of the deceased" while another said, "Nothing more relaxing than lounging in the recliner of a psycho murderer!" "Who wants a murderers belongings? how bizarre," questioned one user.
