BROOMFIELD, COLORADO: AEW saw a change of guard as Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo are out of the equation and Abismo Negro Jr and Flammer are the new AAA World Mixed Tag Team champions. The former were the defending champions and had to protect their title in a Triple Threat at the AAA Noche de Campeones (Night of Champions) event on Wednesday, December 28, against Octagón Jr and Lady Shani on one side and Komander and Sexy Star II on the other. However, they were not available due to double bookings.

Melo teamed up with Anna Jay to go up against Willow Nightingale and Ruby Soho for the New Year’s Smash edition of Dynamite which took place in Colorado. As the tag team did not make their way to Mexico for AAA, they were stripped of their titles. This was the third AAA show that Guevara and Melo missed and the chatter on Wrestling Observer Radio hinted at the dooming development all along. Melo and Guevara held the title for 241 recognized days after winning it back at Triplemania XXX: Monterrey on April 30 by winning a four-way match that also included Komander and Sexy Star II, Maravilla and Látigo, plus the former champions Los Vipers.

Konnan came out to the ring and said that Melo and Guevara were stripped of the titles for repeated absences from AAA’s shows and then made a match to crown new AAA Mixed Tag Champions. He said, "Sammy & Tay have canceled three times, not twice. They wanted their own referee & Tay wanted her own stylist, so I have made a decision. There were three orders of business: Number One, the titles have now been vacated. Number Two: I have already sent someone to the United States to get the titles. And Number Three: Whoever wins this Triple Threat Mix Tag Match will become the new AAA Mixed Tag Champions."

During their 241-day reign, Guevara and Melo defended the title only on two occasions. First, they retained it over Dante Martin and Skye Blue on the August 12 Rampage show and then over Ortiz and Ruby Soho during the AEW All Out pre-show on September 4. Meanwhile, Flammer brought home the AAA Mixed Tag Team titles with a powerful Twisting Sit-down Tombstone to Sexy Star II and carried out the pinfall win.
