LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' captivated audiences with its stunning visuals and rich world-building, however, it has several flaws. As the highly anticipated second season approaches, there's a clear opportunity for the show to address some of the critical missteps from its debut.

The show struggled with handling key elements, including character development and storytelling focus, leaving both die-hard J R R Tolkien fans and casual viewers yearning for more. As we look forward to what comes next, here are five significant areas where 'The Rings of Power' stumbled and what needs to change in Season 2 to honor the legacy of Middle-earth truly.

1. 'The Rings of Power' needs to focus on the core narrative

Season 1 of 'The Rings of Power' focused too heavily on creating mystery around characters like Halbrand and the Stranger, which ultimately detracted from the narrative.

By deviating from the source material and leaving even Tolkien fans in the dark, the show lost the opportunity to build suspense around the true identity of Sauron and his influence over the Elves.

Season 2 should shift away from unnecessary mysteries and focus on clear, impactful storytelling that stays true to the spirit of Tolkien’s work, providing viewers with a more coherent and engaging narrative.

2. Who is the Stranger? Viewers demand answers

The Stranger's ambiguous identity throughout Season 1 left viewers puzzled rather than intrigued. While hints suggest he may be Gandalf, the show’s reluctance to confirm this only disconnected his storyline from the main plot.

Season 2 needs to resolve this ambiguity and establish the Stranger's role within the broader context of Middle-earth. Clarifying his identity will allow the audience to better understand his significance and invest emotionally in his journey, tying his storyline more effectively into the overarching narrative.

3. Inconsistent pacing needs to be fixed in 'The Rings of Power'

Season 1 of 'The Rings of Power' struggled with pacing issues, with some storylines dragging on while others, like the forging of the Rings, felt rushed and underdeveloped. This uneven pacing disrupted the narrative flow and left significant plot points feeling anticlimactic.

In Season 2, the show needs to find a better balance, giving important events, like the creation of the Rings of Power, the time and attention they deserve. This will help in building tension and delivering a more satisfying and immersive viewing experience.

4.  Why Harfoot's description is so problematic?

By the time of 'The Lord of the Rings', the Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallohides had merged into a single Hobbit population (@primevideo)

The portrayal of the Harfoots in Season 1 was surprisingly troubling, particularly their practice of abandoning members who struggled physically. This depiction clashed with Tolkien’s depiction of Hobbits as warm-hearted and compassionate.

To make the Harfoots more sympathetic and relatable, Season 2 should either rework or completely retcon this aspect of their culture. By aligning their behavior more closely with Tolkien’s vision, the show can create a more cohesive and engaging portrayal of these characters, allowing viewers to connect with them on a deeper level.

5. Why Galadriel's character lacks depth?

Galadriel’s portrayal in Season 1 received criticism for lacking warmth and depth, focusing too narrowly on her quest for vengeance. This one-dimensional characterization made it difficult for viewers to empathize with her.

In Season 2, the show should introduce more moments of wit, warmth, and humanity into Galadriel’s storyline. By fleshing out her character and allowing her to show more nuanced emotions, the series can present a more balanced and relatable version of Galadriel, capturing the complexity and grace that fans expect from this iconic character.
