When it comes to rock 'n' roll, the nation has a long and diverse past. US musicians have influenced millions of music lovers worldwide throughout the generations, from the earliest days of the blues to the glam metal excesses of the 1980s and the grunge movement of the 1990s.

Only collective ensembles without identifiable solo artists are included in the list below, even though bands like Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band would be more than deserving of mention when discussing the greatest US rock acts.

1. Nirvana

When Kurt Cobain became an odd representative for the disgruntled, disenfranchised twenty-somethings of the era in the early 1990s, Nirvana brought a generation together. Although Cobain's characteristic drawl and the band's loud rock arrangements spoke to Generation X in a manner that few had before, it was far from the extent of their appeal.



 

2. The Beach Boys

After establishing in 1961, The Beach Boys merged surf rock with enduring pop melodies and gorgeous harmonies, carving up a unique musical space for themselves. Few bands before or after have used the recording studio in such avant-garde ways or with such infinite ingenuity, yet the group's songs were written with a gleeful perfection that set them apart from their contemporaries.



 

3. Aerosmith

Aerosmith was the master of arena rock in their heyday. The fact that the organization has been around since 1970 is noteworthy in and of itself. 'Dream On', their first top 10 single, reached the top of the charts in 1976, while 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing', their biggest hit, reached the top of the charts in 1998.



 

4. The Eagles

The Eagles' popularity over the past five decades is evidence of their appeal, as seen by the fact that they have sold over 100 million records in the US alone. The Eagles' sun-drenched music reflects the sweltering climate of their native California, and their carefree brand of soft rock is as American as it comes on songs like 'Take it Easy' and 'Hotel California'.



 

5. REM

REM, a mixed stadium rock, indie, and country produced some of the most captivating songs of the 1980s and 1990s. Throughout their history, which ran from their founding in Georgia in 1980 until the band's breakup in 2011, the group's music was supported by the recognizable vocals of frontman Michael Stipe and the incredibly underrated lead guitar work of Peter Buck.
