LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND: A four-year-old girl whose struggle with the deadly Strep A infection gripped the nation's heartstrings has been taken off a ventilator as her condition begins to improve. Camila Rose Burns, a patient from Bolton, Lancashire, is fighting Strep A in Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool and is now breathing on her own with additional oxygen after being taken off the machine.

She only developed the infection just over a week ago, and she is still receiving dialysis in the hospital's intensive care unit. Her parents, Kaye and Dean Burns expressed gratitude to the public for helping and praying for their family and reported that their daughter has made "massive improvement" after being off the ventilator. The little girl is also battling sepsis, and according to her parents, she is "still extremely poorly."

"We have still not made it to the ‘safety’ of being out of intensive care. We are praying for her to continue to get better and for her body to recover so she can get back to playing at home with her family. Thank you so, so much for all your prayers and we ask that you please keep praying," her parents told Bolton News.

The family has also stated that they have been "overwhelmed" by the money received through the GoFundMe fundraiser, raffles, and fundraising events held in the family's support, including offers of assistance and kind deeds to Camila. They were able to earn $26,793 after her aunt Laura Daniels created a GoFundMe page to support her parents so that they could "stay at Camila's side 24/7."

It all began when Dean bought his daughter to the hospital after she complained of chest burns after a bug went around the children of her school. She was sent home with an inhaler on the first day but was rushed back into the hospital the very next day. She was not responding to treatment and was kept in the critical care unit since. "She's fighting for her life, and I've told her how much I love her, her mum loves, her sister loves her, we all love her," Dean said at the time. "Everyone’s saying prayers for her, hoping for a miracle she lives. She needs to live, she's such a special little girl. I can still hear her singing... it's too much." He also urged other parents to "look out for the signs" and act quickly if they believe their child is sick.
