The Texas Killing Fields: Who is Robert Abel and where is he now? Alleged serial killer was never arrested
LEAGUE CITY, TEXAS: With the Netflix true crime documentary 'Crime Scene: The Texas Killing Fields' being on the top 10 of the streaming giant’s service, it is a show that is not at all to be missed. The series tells the story of unsolved murders of four women whose corpses were found in a patch of land called The Texas Killing Fields in League City, Texas. The docu-series has three episodes.
The Texas Killing Fields is a 25-acre patch of land in the area along the Interstate highway 45 between Houston and Galveston. More than 30 bodies have been found in the area between 1971 to 2006 leading to its very unceremonious moniker. Most people whose remains were found in the land were little girls or adult women, all between the ages 12 to 25. However, the man who has been in the minds of everyone who watched the show and read up on the case is Robert Abel. The man is linked to deaths of four women but was never convicted, according to Newsweek.

In 1984, the first of the four women were found, with the remains of Heidi Fye, 23, being spotted on the patch of land right next to where Laura Miller’s was found two years later. When investigations into Miller’s missing body were being made, another corpse was found, who wasn’t identified until years later as Audrey Lee Cook, a mechanic who was last seen alive in 1985. A fourth body was also found six years later in 1991 in the same area and was identified as Donna Gonsoulin Prudhomme in 2019.
Who is Robert Abel and where is he now?
Abel was a retired NASA engineer, who was linked to the disappearance and deaths of many young women. What made Abel a suspect was that he owned the property right next to the land where the bodies were found. However, he was never arrested because there was never enough evidence to incriminate him. This was despite the fact that an affidavit had Abel marked as a serial sexual offender who showed signs of mad behavior that is often seen with serial killers. The police tried hard to incriminate Abel with his home being searched for evidence and him being interviewed by the detectives on the case multiple times – only for it all to go in vain.
Abel spoke to the media about how this has affected him. He claimed he was a man with a clean record and someone who had never been on the wrong side of the law before. "My life has been destroyed; my reputation ruined… I didn't kill any of those girls. I wouldn't know how to kill,” he said. Abel died in 2005, when he was 65 years old, when he was hit by a train while traveling on a golf cart. It is not clear to this day as to whether he had intended to die or if it was accidental.
