Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who owns at least two houses in Georgia, on Saturday declared that it is "the worst state in the country to live." Abrams, who is running unopposed while incumbent and heavy favorite Brian Kemp and Trump-backed David Perdue fight it out for the GOP nomination, was reacting to Kemp's persistent brag that the Peach State is the best in the nation to do business.

"I am tired of hearing about how we're the best state in the country to do business when we are the worst state in the country to live," she said in a speech at the Gwinnett Democrats' Bluetopia Gala in Norcross Saturday, May 21.

Abrams, later doubled down on her claim, tweeting: "GA may be #1 place for biz, but we’re #48 in mental health, #2 in uninsured. #1 in maternal mortality & new HIV cases, #9 in gun violence," she wrote. "For too many, Kemp’s Georgia doesn’t include them. Why? Because #KempDoesntCare. As Governor, I’ll lead #OneGeorgia that’s #1 for all of us."

Abrams faced a lot of backlash for her statement as she is a millionaire who reportedly owns at least two homes in Georgia.

What is Stacey Abrams' net worth?

According to state disclosures filed in March, Abrams is worth $3.17 million. Four years ago, during the Georgia governor campaign 2018, Abrams struggled with debt and her net worth was around $109,000. Her personal finances and a hefty bill from the IRS gave Republicans fodder to question how she could manage a state budget when she struggled with her own debts. However, this time during her second gubernatorial election campaign, money does not seem to be an issue for her.

Reportedly, this time, Liberal billionaire George Soros is backing Stacey Abrams for her Georgia governor campaign. Soros' Democracy PAC II, a federal committee bankrolled by $125 million from the financier for the 2022 elections, made a $1 million donation to One Georgia Inc. on March 11, Federal Election Commission records show. The campaign committee has also received a cash infusion from Democratic Governors Association-Georgia and another Abrams'-connected entity. DGA-Georgia made a $1 million donation to One Georgia on March 11, the same day as the Soros donation, and The Fair Fight PAC transferred $1.5 million to One Georgia three days later, federal records show, meaning it has at least $3.5 million sitting in its coffers for its reactivation.

Abrams now has a net worth of $3.17 million according to the Associated Press. Abrams gave 37 paid speeches in 2021 and has written or co-written or reissued six books since 2019. Abrams was also paid more than $700,000 over three years as executive director of the Southern Economic Advancement Project, the report said. Over those years, Abrams has paid off her student loan, credit card, and IRS debt, and went from having $5,000 in her retirement account to a portfolio of $725,000 in stocks and bonds. She also bought a $1.2 million home just outside Atlanta, as well as a house for her parents costing $370,000, on which she owes $280,000 on a mortgage.

In a statement to the AP, Abrams accused Republicans of having "demonized" her achievements. "It is remarkable to me that success is now being demonized by the Republicans," Abrams said. "I believe in success. I believe that every person should have the opportunity to thrive. And because I had three years where I was in the private sector, I leveraged all three years, and in that time, I've done my best to not only be successful personally but to do what I can to help Georgians."

Garrison Douglas, a spokesman for the Georgia Republican Party, accused her of using her campaign “as a platform for her own financial gain". However, in response, Abrams has pointed out that her Republican rivals have an even higher net worth than she does. Governor of Georgia Brian Kemp reported $5.2 million in assets on a disclosure last month, while David Perdue, the former senator and onetime Dollar General CEO said he is worth $50 million.
