'You' Season 2: Will Joe's relocation from New York to Los Angeles lead him to refrain from his stalker-y ways?
Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is the quintessential New Yorker, running a store for rare books, walking whenever he moves around the city, even quoting JD Salinger when convenient, especially since the woman he "loved" was best friends with a Salinger descendent, Peach (Shay Mitchell).
Season 2 will see Joe moving to Los Angeles, presumably to run from his past. By the end of Season 1, he had killed Guinevere Beck and Candace, another ex-girlfriend he presumed to be dead, resurfaced.
In the trailer for Second 2, Joe's monologue says love has taken him to some dark places, but that Los Angeles is the darkest of them all. It's clear that, to Joe, as a New Yorker, Los Angeles represents everything he doesn't want in life — the fantasy that the people of Los Angeles like to create for their online profiles, dominated by the presence of Hollywood and everyone pretends to be something they are not, as Joe tells the viewers.
Of course, to Joe, Los Angeles feels like the "anti-New York", and as a typical New Yorker, he may not see that those from Los Angeles would be thinking the same of New York. It is quite possible we would see a shift in the tones of the show as the setting shifts from New York to Los Angeles. New York would be about the city lights in the night, while Los Angeles would be about the sunshine and brightness.
The question remains, will a change in location mean a change in Joe Goldberg's behavior? Considering that he might be looking to escape his past, it is possible that he would want to refrain from his old, stalker-y ways and it might mean that his new love interest, Love Quinn, would inspire him to be a better person.
Season 2 of 'You' will be released on Netflix on December 26.
