'Yellowjackets' Episode 9 Review: 'Doomcoming' is all drugs, hallucinations and raunch
Contains spoilers for 'Yellowjackets' Episode 9 'Doomcoming'
'Yellowjackets' was greenlit for a Season 2 even before it reached the midway mark, and that puts a lot of storylines in perspective. It's a bit of a dampener really. Now the audience will steel themselves up for a finale that they know will be continued. That said, the penultimate episode sets the tone for a humdinger, gripping and grotesquely enchanting finale. 'Doomcoming' hits the hilt of horror when it shows the effects magic mushrooms can have especially when the stress levels of teens hit the roof, and while at it, also answers some key questions.
Jackie (Ella Purnell) seems to be the one behind all that's happening to the survivors in present day. She's got every reason to be especially after being shunned as the slob queenduring her time with the others in the wilderness. Secrets tumble out, adultery and revenge follows and all of that when they're actually fighting for survival. So far, there have been traces of the supernatural even as most debate that the Showtime survival drama is actually a psychological thriller.

In 'Doomcoming', the horror is when these teens, under the influence of shrooms, are nothing more than savages as they grab Travis, whose just had some steamy sex with Jackie is practically part of an orgy (Note that these teens are actually under the impression that Travis is nothing more than meat). Before the episode approached borderline erotica, the scene switches, but not before another raunchy segment between Liv and Taissa. Coach Ben finally comes out as gay, and in the present, Shauna kills Adam and Jeff reveals he was the blackmailer.
It all doesn't add up though. Jeff might have done it for the money, but it is pretty unclear that he's fully aware of all that's happened in the wilderness. This brings us back to the possibility of Jackie somehow surviving the crash. Right now, details of their rescue is yet to be shown and that makes almost everyone alive at this point a suspect. 'Yellowjackets' leaves no stone unturned when it comes to taking horror and gore to dizzying heights.
The start of cannibalism begins here though. With the berries done, the meat skewered, it's only a matter of time before these teens turn against each other to stave off hunger. Hate seems good enough a reason to kill and cook them later. They're spiralling, and they just don't know it yet.
'Yellowjackets' airs Sundays at 9 pm ET on Showtime/
