NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: MSNBC’s anchor Yasmin Vossoughian has opened up about her health after suffering for over a month. After returning back on-air, she told the viewers the reason behind her absence from the show. The 44-year-old reportedly confirmed that she had been “dealing with a little bit of a health scare.”

She started as reported by PEOPLE, “On December 20th, I began to feel chest pains and they waxed and waned over a period of ten days. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it but as it continued to get worse I started to think something was actually wrong.” On December 30, Vossoughian got herself checked at an urgent care center and was informed that the pain was nothing but reflux.

‘Was pretty certain not to believe the reflux’ diagnosis

The journalist reportedly shared, “I didn't really buy it [the diagnosis]. But I was relieved it wasn't my heart. My body though, was pretty certain not to believe the reflux.” As per her, the next day’s pain was unbearable, which forced her to get admitted to the hospital. She explained, “I woke up with severe pains both in my chest and my left shoulder. It was like a tightening in my chest. I took deep breaths that got worse when I was laying flat.

“I knew enough in that moment that it could mean, could is the key word here, that I was having a heart attack, especially because it was on the left part of my shoulder.”  Vossoughian also told the audience that she’s “a pretty healthy person,” who runs seven miles numerous times a week, does not do alcohol or smoke, and does not eat meat.

But despite these, she tested positive for pericarditis — “an inflammation of the pericardium or sac that contains your heart,” as stated by Cleveland Clinic. Vossoughian said that pericarditis happens because of a “common cold.” She had to spend several days in the hospital as medical experts took out the excessive fluid encircling her heart. Vossoughian told Insider, "A lot of times as women specifically, we don't trust our gut, we don't trust our instincts because we're pleasers, society tells us to be pleasers. My advice is listen to your gut."

‘But that was not the end’

After the treatment, Vossoughian finally got discharged. She reportedly said, “I bounced out of the hospital. I couldn't get out of there fast enough with the hopes I was on the mend. But that was not the end.” Three days later, she was diagnosed with myocarditis, which is inflammation of the heart muscle.

There came a point when Vossoughian thought if "this is it" but everything went well and she realized that “it was just the cold that was doing all of this. It had caused all of this inflammation around my heart”. With this belief in her heart, the media person is hoping to be “on the other side” of her health problems.

Vossoughian also invited her cardiologist, Dr Greg Katz, on the show, who shed more light on how cold could have an effect on the heart. The doctor stated, “It's the way your body is responding to the cold. Your immune system, for most of us, takes a couple of days to clear the virus. But for a small proportion of people, they get an overactive immune response. They can have inflammation in lots of different areas.”
