'X-Men '97' Season 1 Finale: All mutants who died a tragic death in Disney+'s much-loved series
Contains spoilers and speculations for 'X-Men '97'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Disney+ just dropped the season finale of 'X-Men '97' on Wednesday, May 15, delivering a gripping conclusion to the first season.
Throughout the 10 episodes, we've seen numerous mutants meet their end, including some fan favorites. While some have managed to make a comeback, others remain uncertain.
The most devastating loss occurred during the episode titled 'Remember It,' where a massive Sentinel wreaked havoc on Genosha, resulting in the deaths of many beloved mutants.
The exact number of casualties remains unclear. Cyclops turned to his fellow X-Men for answers, but they were left stunned by the tragic events unfolding before them, leaving both fans and Cyclops in suspense.
Later, social media confirmed the deaths of several named characters, deepening the sorrow portrayed in the episode. On that note, here are all the mutants who died in 'X-Men '97' Season 1.
Gambit
Known for his thick Cajun accent, penchant for playing cards, and habit of speaking in the third person, Gambit possessed the unique ability to charge objects with kinetic energy.
His death is perhaps the most memorable moment of the episode. His final words lent their name to Episode 5. Furthermore, Gambit perished believing that Rogue had chosen Magneto over him, a belief that Season 1 showrunner Beau DeMayo emphasized as crucial.
During the battle with the colossal Sentinel, Gambit sustained a fatal stab wound. Yet, summoning his last reserves of energy, he triggered a massive explosion that obliterated both himself and the Sentinel.
Madelyne Pryor
Thanks to Mister Sinister's meddling, Madelyne Pryor and Jean Grey find themselves as clones, unaware of who the original was or when the switch occurred. They do know, however, that Madelyne gave birth to Nathan Summers before sending him away.
Endowed with the mind-reading and mind-control abilities of her clone, Madelyne relocated to Genosha to serve on the mutant nation's ruling council, representing the X-Men.
Her tenure was short-lived, cut short by her demise during Genosha's destruction.
In her final moments, Madelyne glimpsed her grown son, Nathan Summers (Cable), attempting to prevent the impending catastrophe.
When he realized the futility of his efforts, he apologized to his mother before departing through a portal, just as the onslaught commenced.
Amid the chaos of the episode's climactic minutes, fans may have questioned Madelyne's fate. However, DeMayo confirmed her death on social media afterward, specifying that she was "vaporized."
Dazzler
While not receiving much focus in 'X-Men '97,' Dazzler met her end definitively in Episode 5.
In the comics, Dazzler possesses the ability to convert sonic vibrations into beams of light, which she often uses for her concerts but can also wield as weapons in battle.
DeMayo clarified this death online, addressing the confusion surrounding the identity of the deceased individual presumed to be Dazzler.
Banshee
Banshee, though not a central figure in 'X-Men '97,' suffered a notable loss in Episode 5. The Irish mutant possesses the ability of a sonic scream and forms a romantic relationship with Moira MacTaggert.
During the assault on Genosha, Banshee, alongside the mutant Marrow, attempted to flee while instructing Rogue to seek refuge in the gardens. However, they were both caught in the blast unleashed by the Sentinel.
Neither Banshee nor Marrow reappeared following the explosion, suggesting they were both casualties of the devastating attack.
Marrow
Marrow's mutant ability involves growing bones out of her skin, which she wields as weapons. Recognizable by her short, red hair and bone-like wings protruding from her back, Banshee shielded Marrow just before they were both struck.
While there's a chance that either Banshee, Marrow, or both survived, the severity of the attack combined with their absence in the episode suggests otherwise. It's probable that they didn't survive the destructive event.
Sebastian Shaw
In the comics, Sebastian Shaw is a mutant who can absorb energy. He's often linked with Emma Frost and the Hellfire Club. In 'X-Men '97,' both Shaw and Emma were part of the Genosha council earlier in the episode.
While Sebastian's death isn't shown on-screen, fans can spot his lifeless body beside Dazzler around the 26:00 mark in Episode 5 of 'X-Men '97.'
Callisto
Callisto possesses super senses, making her a skilled fighter recognizable by her short hair and eyepatch.
Although her death isn't depicted on-screen in 'X-Men '97,' it did occur. Fans can notice Callisto lying unconscious on the ground, with her pupil contracting briefly, indicating the loss of her mutant power.
Given Callisto's enhanced sight abilities, the shrinking pupil likely suggests the cessation of her powers following her death.
Squid-Boy
Despite being named after a squid, Squid-Boy exhibits fish-like traits due to his mutation. For instance, his head resembles that of an orange fish. In the comics, Squid-Boy once rescued Juggernaut from drowning, forging a close bond between them.
In 'X-Men '97,' Squid-Boy is another mutant whose demise occurs off-screen. However, viewers can see his lifeless body among the casualties of the attack.
