World Meteorological Day is observed annually on March 23 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to commemorate the day the group was officially founded in 1950. The day emphasizes the importance of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) to the safety and well-being of society.

In a nutshell, meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and its phenomena, with an emphasis on weather forecasting, and NMHS play a critical role in the development of early warning systems and improved observations.

History of World Meteorological Day

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a United Nations agency, took over the position of the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) on March 23, 1950.

With the intention of integrating the efforts of member countries in earth sciences, operational hydrology, and meteorological disciplines to protect their populations, it began its work in 1951. The first World Meteorological Day was celebrated on March 23, 1961.

Theme of World Meteorological Day in 2023

The theme of World Meteorological Day 2023 is the future of weather, climate and water across generations. It calls us to honor our commitments and ensure that future generations inherit a better future.

Significance of World Meteorological Day during climate crisis

The World Meteorological Day 2023 serves as a reminder of the changing climate. Today's average global temperature is 1.1°C higher than it was 150 years ago, and climate change is causing heatwaves, droughts, flooding, wildfires, and famines to become more severe, World Meterological Organization reported.

The organization posted on twitter, saying, "This #WorldMetDay considers our choices' impact on the future of weather, climate, and water across generations. Our responsibility is to create a better tomorrow for future generations."

In order to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a rapid implementation of policies that restructure the energy and transportation sectors, phase out fossil fuels, and support a just transition to renewable energy. At COP27, the Early Warnings for Everyone Initiative received support from developed and developing nations, the UN family, and the commercial sector.
