‘Do not marry that man’: Internet supports woman after she refuses to pay for fiance’s daughter’s college
They say ‘money has a way of inciting hassle in relationships’ and it was proved to be true when a woman angered her fiancé by refusing to pay for his daughter's college. Explaining the situation, the 35-year-old woman, who goes by the username u/Old_Caterpillar_2719, noted that she is engaged to her fiancé Brian, who has a 14-year-old daughter, Ashley, from his previous relationship. She also revealed that they have been together for 2 years and now she is pregnant with their own daughter.
“I like to play the lottery sometimes. Usually just scratch tickets. This time I won 50,000. Of course, I was very excited. I decided to take the money and put it away for my future child’s future,” the woman wrote in a post on Reddit’s 'AITA' forum. The OP told her fiancé about the money and that she is planning to save this money for their daughter’s future. But Brian made a request and asked her to “take some of the money for Ashley since she’s going to be graduating high school in a few years.”

'My mother-in-law is also pressuring me'
The woman noted that Brian and his ex-partner already have a fund for Ashley’s education but apparently, that is not enough for all of it. “I let him know this money would be being used for our child since it was won by me and I’d be the one paying taxes on it since we’re not married yet. I let him know once the baby was born it would go into a trust that no one had access to,” she further wrote in the post.
The OP said Brian and Ashley now think that she is being ‘ridiculous’ as their unborn baby would have more money than her set aside already and 'that it’s unfair’. "I explained I understood how they felt but I think I’m doing the right thing. Now my mother-in-law is also pressuring me because Ashley went to her house feeling upset saying the baby is getting preferred treatment already," the woman wrote. She also noted that Ashley was unaware of the lottery money until she walked into the house when the couple was discussing it.
'This is a red flag'
“Ashley then thought this meant “we” won the money as in her father and I since were engaged,” the OP asserted, adding she changed all names because of privacy purposes. The woman’s post has since garnered immense social media attention, with many users supporting her in the decision. “Run. Do not marry that man,” one user said while the second wrote “He is not entitled to one cent of that money and certainly his daughter IS NOT. She has two parents already who are putting up money for her but she, and others, are mad that another person, you, is not also contributing. EF that.”
“Ashley has two parents to pay for her, your fiance and her mum. Your baby has two parents to pay for it, you and your fiance. You are not married to your fiance, your money is not his money, his money is not your money,” the third user asserted. Another user chimed in saying, “Definitely put the money away before you get married to him. Financial abuse is real and this is a red flag in that respect. NTA you won the money, not your fiancé's kid.”
