Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings’ sons release 'Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys' full version
Sons of country legends Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, Lukas Nelson and Shooter Jennings, released January 23 their full-length version of 'Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys'. The version by the sons, first heard as the theme song for the Netflix comedy series 'The Ranch', was originally shortened until now, with its own full-length release. The hit comedy series, 'The Ranch', stars Ashton Kutcher, Elisha Cuthbert, and Sam Elliott, and kicks off its final season (Part 8 or Season 4B) January 24.
Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings recorded their hit cover on 'Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys', originally written by Ed and Patsy Bruce, in 1978 for their duets album 'Waylon & Willie'. Now, over 40 years later, sons Lukas and Shooter have united in bringing us their own rendition on the hit country song, according to Rolling Stone.
“Lukas and I had a great time in the studio. We came up with an alternate rhythm that changes the vibe a little bit from the original — that gave us the space to make it our own,” said Shooter Jennings. “He and I have had very close relationships with our fathers — they always were our Number One fans. I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to sing this song with my brother and just have fun with it.”
“Working with Shooter was an honor,” Lukas said. “We had a great time in the studio and I would love to do it again many times.”
The duet isn’t the first time the outlaw artists have collaborated, however. Lukas and Shooter have toured together in the past, sharing the stage to perform their own material and other songs by their fathers, including 'Good Hearted Woman'. Lukas and his band Promise of the Real announced a new tour this week on January 21, the 'Naked Garden Tour', that kicks off March 22 in Missouri. Their next date, part of their 'Evening With…' tour, takes place February 19 in Denver. Shooter, meanwhile, will embark with performances on the 'Outlaw Country Cruise' festival January 29. Along with Brandi Carlile, he produced Tanya Tucker’s Grammy-nominated album 'While I’m Livin‘, which is geared for Best Country Album at Sunday’s awards. Read more on the cruise experience here.
'The Ranch' soundtrack, partnering with Netflix and Nashville’s Curb Records, features songs by Lee Brice, Wynonna, and Mo Pitney, among others. A 12″ vinyl edition will launch on February 14.
