Spoilers for 'One Day' on Netflix

LONDON, ENGLAND: Based on the novel of the same name by David Nicholls, Netflix's 'One Day' premiered on Thursday, February 8.

Spanning 14 episodes, the series explores the platonic love between Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall). Their paths intersect by chance at their graduation celebration, setting up the stage for a destiny that entwines them for nearly twenty years.

However, as fans are captivated by the stunning depiction of their journey, the lingering question remains, will a second season be possible?

Regrettably, the answer is no. The series reached its climax with Emma's death and Dexter's journey to healing in the final episodes, making it hard to speculate anything about the possibility of a second season.

Based on the well-loved novel of the same name, the series has wrapped up the plot of the book within its 14 episodes, which is also quite a rarity for Netflix.

However, the possibility isn't ruled out entirely. The production company determines the potential for a spin-off or a prequel based on the reception from critics, the audience, and the series' success.

If all factors align favorably, a second season might still be on the cards.

Possible plotlines for a spin-off

A prospective second season can shed light on Dexter's life after Emma's death.

The potential backstories of Emma and Dexter, including their lives before they met, and most importantly, Emma's parents, who were absent from the first season, could serve as compelling foundations for new plotlines.

In addition, by combining science fiction with fantasy elements, the sequel has the potential to delve into alternative timelines. Instead of centering on a platonic relationship, it could explore the consequences of Emma and Dexter making different decisions.

This could essentially unfold as a parallel universe of sorts. Overall, the prospect of witnessing Emma and Dexter on their next journey is intriguing, where maybe in the end they could get their happily ever after.

'One Day' is now streaming on Netflix.
