'American Idol' may soon welcome back a beloved alumnus. The singing reality show is currently airing its 24th season on ABC, and several long-time fans consider its fifth season one of its best. Not only did the season feature superstars like Katharine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, Elliott Yamin, Kellie Pickler, Ace Young, Bucky Covington, Paris Bennett, and the late Mandisa, but it also possibly gave the franchise one of its most celebrated winners in the form of Taylor Hicks. The now 49-year-old singer recently teased on social media that he might soon return to where it all began.

The post featured a throwback photo of Hicks performing on the show. He is seen sporting the iconic purple velvet jacket, indicating the picture is from his rendition of 'Takin' It to the Streets,' which he performed during the Top 16 back in 2006. The photo is accompanied by a caption that reads, "Stay tuned for some big @americanidol news soon." The caption definitely hints at a comeback of sorts. It remains to be seen in what capacity the former winner will return. Only three more episodes remain in the ongoing season, including the finale, which will air on May 11. Hicks could return for the upcoming University-themed episode

During an interview with Billboard, executive producer and showrunner Megan Michaels Wolflick shared that Season 24 would include a brand new theme. The University-themed episode will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the much-loved Season 5. Wolflick added that the 'Class of 2006' will be present for the occasion, and Hicks' announcement perfectly aligns with this reveal. The episode could air on April 27 or May 4, but an official announcement is still awaited. Currently, seven hopefuls remain in the running after the latest elimination during Disney Night

Hicks was a standout performer throughout his run on the show. His soulful and energetic performances earned him a dedicated fanbase that dubbed itself the 'Soul Patrol.' He delivered multiple hit performances back-to-back to win the coveted title. His winning single, 'Do I Make You Proud,' helped him secure the victory over Katharine McPhee. After the show, he signed with 19 Recordings Limited/Arista Records and released his winning single as his debut song. The track reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and was later certified Gold by the RIAA. 'American Idol' airs new episodes every Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
