‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ boss addresses Sheldon Cooper’s long-awaited return
‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ Season 3 will bring the Cooper family back to CBS on October 8, but one familiar face is still missing from the spinoff. Iain Armitage has not appeared as Sheldon Cooper in the series, even as several other ‘Young Sheldon’ characters have returned. With the new season set to continue Georgie’s conflict with Mary, viewers may be wondering whether Sheldon could come home and become part of that story. Executive producer Steve Holland has now explained why the possibility remains open, even though no cameo has been confirmed.
Holland told People in an interview that the production team wants Iain armitage to return, but the appearance must fit the story and the franchise timeline. “At some point we would love to have Iain return as Sheldon; it’s just about finding the right time and the right story,” he said. “We know from Big Bang that Sheldon didn’t come home a lot after leaving for college, so we need to make sure, when it happens, that there’s a good reason for it.” His comments mean Sheldon is not currently confirmed for Season 3, but the writers have not ruled out bringing him back.
Holland also said that he remains in contact with Armitage and his mother, which keeps the possibility of an appearance open. “I keep in touch with Iain and his mom,” he said, “so, hopefully, when the moment arises, they’ll be into it as well.” Sheldon’s return would therefore depend on the writers finding a plot that fits his established history and on Armitage agreeing to take part. The show is not planning to bring him back for a standalone guest appearance without a reason connected to Georgie and Mandy’s story.
For the unversed, Season 2 ended with the main conflict centered on Georgie Cooper and his mother, Mary Cooper, rather than Georgie and Mandy’s marriage. Mary became close to Fred Fagenbacher, Georgie’s business rival, after he started attending her Bible study and told her that he was interested in her. Georgie did not believe Fred had changed and suspected that he was using Mary to get back at him. Their argument ended with Georgie telling Mary that she would not be allowed to see Ceecee if she dated Fred, while Mary ordered him out of her house.
That feud will remain part of Season 3, along with other unresolved storylines from the finale. Connor was arrested after going on tour with his band and did not want his parents to know, while Mandy’s new job began bringing her more attention. Holland said, “There’s certainly a lot to pick up on from the finale. Mary and Georgie aren’t speaking, Connor’s been arrested and doesn’t want his parents to know. Mandy’s new job is getting her more attention. But to us, this show really lives in the day to day drama of marriage and kids and family.”
A Sheldon appearance could connect to the Cooper family conflict, but Holland did not say that the writers have found that story yet. ‘The Big Bang Theory’ established that Sheldon rarely returned home after leaving for college, so any visit would need to explain why he came back. That makes a Season 3 cameo possible rather than planned. For now, Armitage’s return remains dependent on whether the show finds a reason that works within both ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ and the timeline already established by the franchise.
