Damian Lewis' Bobby Axelrod is a notable absentee in the 'Billions' Season 6 trailer. The trailer showed Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) and Chuck Rhoades Jr (Paul Giamatti) who face off. The thrilling battle between a hedge fund honcho Axe (Damian Lewis) and AG Rhoades continued with new players introduced in the mix. Such was the ending of Season 5 that a new season is inevitable

Season 5 ended with Mike Princen buying AxeCap from Axe and paying him two billion upfront. It also saw the latter avoid going to prison after the cannabis deal goes bad. Rhoades bent on arresting Axe comes to know about Prince's move that saw his target slip away to Switzerland. Wendy (Maggie Siff) is heartbroken as Axe decides to travel, while he intends to stay back and take care of the family. Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon) will almost certainly work with Mike as the new boss. Only time will tell if she decides to change her mind and work on her relationship with Axe.

The new trailer suggests that there is a new battle in the offing. In a recent interview with EW, co-creator, Brian Koppelman said the season is structured differently. "Billions season 6 really does have all the stuff you love about the tone and ensemble and feel. It's the next evolution of the show. But the characters are still set. All the characters still have their own needs, desires, wants, and those needs, desires, wants might very well come into conflict with other characters on the show."

Will Damian Lewis return as Bobby Axelrod in 'Billions' Season 6?

The end of the previous season had fans questioning if Lewis would return for the sixth installment of the Showtime drama. He was also not seen in the promo of the new season. But his exit was in typical Axe fashion. "I can’t spend my life being some caged animal,” Axe tells Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff) before he goes. “I stay, the truth is, after the fight, I lose. They got me. I’m going to jail, I’m not staying and fighting. I’m getting out of here … to a place on the continent, where there’s no extradition for certain financial crimes."

We can safely assume that Axe is not going to come back anytime soon. Expect some name drops and flashbacks, but there is no doubt that at least the first half of Season 6 will not have a lot of Lewis on the show. But, 'Billions' is notorious for tossing some surprises along the way and that leaves a glimmer of hope about Lewis' return. His exit was hinted at in 2020 when he spoke to GQ playing the titular character.  "Over a period of time, I find Bobby Axelrod sits heavily on me. By the end of each six months, I have had enough of it.”

'Billions' Season 6 premieres January 23 on Showtime.
