Rick Grimes trilogy won’t happen, here’s why it’s replaced with ‘The Walking Dead’ spin-off
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Everything in the cinematic world revolves around consistency and the audience's reviews. 'The Walking Dead' universe fell short of creating three massive films surrounding Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes, and hence came up with the alternative of presenting fans with Rick Grimes and Michonne's 'Walking Dead' spin-off series. While fans were eagerly waiting for the movies, it seemed like it took forever for production to start, with a global pandemic not making things any easier.
'The Walking Dead' is the most-watched television series in basic cable history, based on the graphic novels of the same name. Rick Grimes is the key character of the show, and the entire plot revolves around him and his group living in a post-apocalyptic zombie world while trying to stay alive. Things changed for the series when Andrew Lincoln's character exited the show in season 9, creating a swirl in 'The Walking Dead' universe.

The announcement of the Rick Grimes movie
To sum up the loss of such a major character, AMC Network wanted to make up for it with three movies that lead with Rick Grimes and narrate his stand-alone story. But, the production took way too long, with no developments in the process, and they now have a full-fledged global pandemic on their hands. It seemed like fate when Rick Grimes wasn't killed off in the show, but was seen simply disappearing, while risking his life to blow up a bridge to stop a walker (zombie) crowd swarming Alexandria. Although, he was later rescued by Jadis and was unseen until the series finale at the end of season 11. The movies were announced after that, and the production also revealed that the movies will be released under the Universal banner. Since then, the talks about Rick Grimes' movie came to a halt and slowly died.
No consistency and long wait killed the project
There are many roots to the Rick Grimes movie never making it to starting production, and one of them is the time that was taken from when Andrew Lincoln's Rick exited the show till now. But on the brighter side, if we had gotten the trilogy movies, we wouldn't be gushing over the spin-off series of our favorite couple, Rick Grimes and Michonne. The next thing that scared fans was that, in the absence of Rick Grimes, the show would crumble to dust, but nothing of the extreme happened. Instead, the show flourished and grew into a totally different universe while also becoming the most-loved show on television. With 'Fear The Walking Dead' became the superior show, and various spin-offs in the works too, including the upcoming 'The Walking Dead: Dead City', and a solo Daryl TWD spin-off series. As much as we enjoyed Rick Grimes slashing walkers and being the great leader that he is in the series, the show worked and survived without him. With so many branches growing into the universe of 'The Walking Dead', it was evident that fans grew out of the entire Rick Grimes trilogy phase, which ended the entire saga altogether.
