Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez launched a new set of merchandise on her campaign website on Wednesday, December 2. The new offerings included a navy blue sweatshirt with the slogan ‘Tax the Rich’ written on it and it has become a subject of discussion since then.

As reported by Newsweek, the sweatshirt which is priced at $58 was the reason why many on Twitter mocked the New York Congresswoman. The report states that the sweatshirt was originally listed at $65 but has since been discounted. Purchases can be made on Ocasio-Cortez's website. The Newsweek article further states, in 2019, Ocasio-Cortez proposed a tax increase for multimillionaires to pay for the Green New Deal, progressive Democrats' environmental plan, which has been critiqued by conservatives for costing nearly $93 trillion. The slogan ‘Tax the rich’ comes from progressive Democrats' suggestion to increase taxes on the wealthy to pay for social programs.

AOC had announced on Twitter the merchandise is ready for pre-order. She wrote on Twitter, “Thanks! Preorders are open now.” She added, “As always, made in the US with dignified, union jobs paying living wages.”

People on the micro-blogging site soon started discussing it. One user opined, “$58 dollars for a sweatshirt!!?! Seems a little hypocritical unless your target market are trust fund kids with liberal arts degrees in fields they will never go into.” Another said, “It’s hypocritical to have a sweatshirt saying tax the rich when only a rich person would be able to buy it. If a person on a minimum budget is spreading $60 on a sweatshirt there’s a reason they are broke and it’s not the governments fault.” Another alleged, “I work in this industry....&58 for a cheap crappy crewneck sweatshirt with a 1 color print is laughable. For someone as young as AOC is it is shocking how out of touch this is.”

There were others who came in support of AOC. One said, “It is kind of funny how obsessed the right is with AOC.  This is just a normal price for a sweatshirt.” Another opined, “Pretty easy to debunk your entire theory of her being capitalistic.. Its a $58 sweatshirt made in the USA, Union Printed + is cost representative of paying its manufactures a livable wage. If she was capitalistic she would take the MAGA route and have it Made in China @ 1/3 cost.” A user named Stephen Punwasi tweeted, “Everyone: @AOC is selling a "tax the rich" sweatshirt for $58! That's way too expensive. Me, a former mass market apparel designer: Made in America. Union printed. Sounds about right. That's what it costs to pay everyone a decent wage along the way.”

AOC quote-tweeted Stephen’s tweet and hit back, “Republicans are freaking out bc we don’t use slave-wage labor for merch that funds grassroots organizing. But what’s the difference between Trump’s merch and ours? Ours is made in the US. (& for GOP who joke that we shld give T-shirt for free, we actually do - just volunteer). She also added, “Oh, and by the way: Tax the Rich.”
