GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA: A mother-of-three “independent, secure, free thinking daughters” started trending on Twitter on Thursday, August 12, after she expressed pure grief in a tweet. Alison Poggi had recently lost her mother and shared that she was unable to cope with the pain. However, she did not reveal the cause of her mother’s death.

Taking to the social media platform, Poggi tweeted, “I don’t have many followers and I’m ok with that. My mother died 6 weeks ago and I miss her and today is really hard for me. If you see this just say hello. I need it today.” Soon, she started receiving messages of solidarity from other Twitter users sharing their own stories of pain and grief, and how they had dealt with it. One user commented, “Hi Alison! I’m Imogene and I’m a wildlife biologist. I’m so sorry you’re having a rough day. My dad died last July, and I learned that grief is a lonely and non-linear journey. There are no words to truly help, but you’re not fully alone. I hope you find some laughter tomorrow.”

The second user wrote, “This. I learned this as well with the loss of my dad. Hopeful that peace, joy, and purpose find you in the midst of your grief, Alison...and I hope today turned out better for you than you expected!” A tweet read, “My mother died 2 months ago. In my culture you actually become sort of a monk for a day. The few days going through motions I had time to reflect. Just wanted to say we see you. What helps me: live daily being the best human I can be, the way my mom would want.”

Another tweet noted, “I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom and my husband within a year of each other. I remember very well what the six week mark is like. I hope you have the support of family and friends because it is very easy to isolate when you are in pain. I know because I did.” A user while sharing a seemingly philosophical kind of note about death added: “I am so sorry. My mom passed last October. Someone sent me this. I hope it brings you some semblance of comfort.”

A person explained to Poggi how they dealt with the loss of their mother by writing, “Hi Alison, my mother passed a little over two years ago and I can’t go a day without thinking about her. Sometimes when I’m driving home at night I pretend like she’s in the passenger seat next to me and I tell her about my day. Grief is not a linear process. Sending love,” before adding, “also, please pay close attention to your dreams. Your mom may try to visit you (you will know when she does) in your dreams. Cardinals may follow you around or show up outside of your bedroom window. Nothing is a coincidence. She is still with you each and every day.” Another one said, “We are all characters in a book, and it's okay that that book ends. The important thing is that the story lives on in those who read it. You are one of the readers of your mother's story, and there are many more who have read it, and will share it with others.”

Who is Alison Poggi?

There is not much information available about her. However, her Twitter profile says she's from Greenville, North Carolina, and was born on September 11. It also states that she is a “nurse for 25 years, raised 3 independent, secure, free thinking daughters.” She has also proudly mentioned that she is a “liberal and support everyone” and added, “Trump has crushed our morale.”
