COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: A Chicago prosecutor said on Monday, January 30 that the state's charges against renowned musician R Kelly have been dropped, admitting the move would be "disappointing" to his victims. Kim Foxx made her revelation on the eve of a hearing in the state case, in which the 56-year-old is accused of sexually abusing four persons, three of whom were minors. The controversial singer already faces years in prison after being found guilty on two different convictions of federal charges.

On Monday, January 30, Foxx said her office "will no longer be pursuing these indictments" and will urge a judge to throw out those charges. CBS reports Kelly's cases in Cook County are slated for a status hearing on Tuesday. "Sometimes justice is served even when there is no conviction," Foxx remarked.

Why have charges against R Kelly been DROPPED in Chicago?

Kim Foxx stated that her decision had generated some controversy since she had aggressively sought out his victims and pushed them to file complaints. However, she pointed out that the singer, who was born in Chicago, is still in jail after being convicted on federal counts in New York and Illinois. It is common practice in similar cases for prosecutors to move for more trials, especially as 'insurance' in the event the other convictions are overturned on appeal. "We didn't do a monetary cost-benefit analysis," Foxx stated, adding that the funds used for a trial right now could be better spent "in advocacy for other survivors of sexual abuse," as reported by Daily Mail.

'We believe justice has been served'

Robert Sylvester Kelly, who was born Kelly, is now serving a 30-year jail sentence in the New York case and will be sentenced in federal court in Chicago on February 23. However, he is reportedly appealing those convictions. Kelly won't be eligible for release until he is about 80, based only on the New York sentence. Foxx announced that on Tuesday she would urge a judge to throw out the charges. "Mr Kelly is potentially looking at the possibility of never walking out of prison again for the crimes that he's committed," the prosecutor stated, referring to the singer's federal convictions. "While today's cases are no longer being pursued, we believe justice has been served."
