PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA: A Drexel University men's basketball team forward was discovered dead in his apartment on campus on Wednesday, August 2. The deceased was identified as Terrence Butler, a rising junior. His cause of death is still unknown .

Drexel president John Fry said in a statement, "On behalf of the entire Drexel community, we extend our deepest sympathy to Terrence's family, friends and teammates. In addition to being a student-athlete, Terrence was involved in numerous activities and organizations at Drexel and was a friend to many throughout the University community."

Who was Terrence Butler?

Butler, a standout high school athlete who attended Bishop McNamara in Maryland, was nominated for the 2021 McDonald's All-American team and chosen as an All-Conference selection in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference.

The 6-foot-7 forward at Drexel participated in eight games, seven of which occurred in his sophomore year. Injuries had hampered his progress in the previous two seasons. His nine total rebounds earned him a spot on the Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll of the Colonial Athletic Association, as reported by New York Post.

Butler is survived by his parents Terrence and Dena Butler. He was the youngest of three children. Tasia, his sister, played basketball at James Madison, while Tiara, his other sister, played basketball at Syracuse and intends to pursue a degree in engineering.

'We lost a good guy'

Mark Witalec, an employee at Drexel, told ABC6, "Beautiful guy had a nice family. Everybody knew him, everybody on campus knew who he was, and he would treat everybody just the same. You know what I mean, good guy, family-oriented.” Meanwhile, school officials said a variety of counseling and mental health resources have been made available to help students through the difficult time. Witalec added, "We lost a good guy, a good person for the community and everything. We lost a good guy today," as per reports.
