CHICO, CALIFORNIA: Justina Stubbe, a 17-year-old teenage girl, was shot dead and five others were left injured in a drive-by shooting incident in Chico, California. The gunman reportedly opened fire from their vehicle toward a group of people standing in the parking lot of an apartment complex around 3.30 am on Saturday, May 7.

The slain and injured victims are aged between 17 and 21 and reportedly attended a large party earlier in the night in Chico, about 90 miles north of Sacramento. Chico Police Lt Terry Tupper said in a statement that no motive behind the shooting was established. However, he said that “the actual shooting was not random” even though it is unclear if any of the victims were specifically targeted. The gunman is reportedly at large at the time of writing.

Who was Justina Stubbe?

Stubbe was a 17-year-old teenager who was tragically killed in the Chico mass shooting incident. “Justina Stubbe you were just a baby with so much life left to live. We are all so sorry this has happened. This has to stop we are losing our babies too fast!!” said Clint Lobo, whose son was one of the victims injured in the shooting as per Daily Mail.

A close family friend of Stubbe also launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the teen’s funeral. “As most of you probably heard a close family friends of mine the stubbe’s lost their baby girl last night,” the fundraiser read. “No parent should ever have to go through the pain of out living their baby,” it added.

“Everyone wants to know what they can do to help the family. The only thing right now is donate. Funerals are expensive and it’s bad enough this family is grieving. And their lives are forever changed,” the fundraiser continued. “Please help in anyway you can even if it’s just sharing and reposting. RIP Justina,” it concluded. The GoFundMe raised over $5,900 as of Monday morning.

Who were the other victims of the shooting?

In addition to Stubbe’s death, five other people were injured in the shooting. A 17-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man were admitted to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while an 18-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were discharged from the hospital after treatment. Another 19-year-old boy was also in stable condition.

What is known about the gunman?

The suspect involved in the Chico shooting is yet to be caught but investigators are “aggressively pursuing some substantial leads” in search for a suspect, the Daily Mail reported. Police declared that the shooting was an “isolated incident” and said that there was no threat to the community.

Officials reportedly located a person in possession of a firearm and took them into custody in relation to a separate incident that took place several hours before the parking lot shooting at another house party in the area. A second individual was detained at a second party in Chico on charges of possession of a firearm and reckless discharge, the outlet reported.

Chico Police Chief Bill Aldridge said cops were initially dispatched to the same area just before 3 am after a fight broke out at a party when the guest was asked to leave the venue, the publication noted. “During the fight, two victims were reported to have been assaulted. One was allegedly struck on the head with a firearm and the other was allegedly hit over the head with a glass bottle,” Aldridge said in a statement.
