Jeffrey Epstein reportedly spoke to his girlfriend in Belarus over the phone under the ruse that he was calling his long-deceased mother in the hours leading up to his death.
The New York Times obtained more than 2,000 pages of Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) records just days before Epstein's ex-girlfriend and alleged co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell is set to start trial on November 29. The latest records reveal how Epstein requested a "social" phone call on the evening of August 10, 2019, at the Manhattan Detention Center. When asked who he was calling, the high-profile inmate said it was his mother, who died in 2004. Instead, he called his Belarusian girlfriend Karyna Shuliak, 30, and spoke to her for about 15 minutes. Call logs showed Epstein had called Shuliak on July 30 as well.

Who is Karyna Shuliak?
Shuliak, from Belarus, is said to be Epstein's last girlfriend and was reportedly distraught after his death. She arrived in the United States in 2009 at age 20 and studied dentistry. According to The Sun, Shuliak was nicknamed "the inspector" because she was obsessed with finding out who Epstein was in contact with. The NYT article included information about the disgraced financier's secret girlfriend, who was reportedly one of the last people to speak to him before he died. For unknown reasons, Epstein's final phone call was not included in the records. Instead, it noted that the last time he spoke to Shuliak was a week prior.
Sources close to the young woman have claimed she is one of the largest beneficiaries of several of Epstein's trusts. He is said to have paid for Shuliak to attend dental school. One source said Shuliak was "depressed" after Epstein's death and her friends were worried about her because she was embroiled in a "very complicated situation." Another source close to the case said the two started dating after he came out of prison for procuring a minor for prostitution in 2010. "No one stayed with him except Karyna who was there until the very last moment," a source told the Daily Mail. "Even his closest friends."

Epstein, 66, allegedly paid for expensive medical treatment for Shuliak's mother and is also said to have bankrolled the home where her family lives in Belarus. The relationship between Shuliak and Epstein was first revealed in March and might have been going on for at least nine years, according to the Daily Mail. She was reportedly highly possessive of Epstein and probed everyone he was in contact with. While Shuliak may have discovered secrets about the billionaire pedophile and members of his elite inner circle, she reportedly was not involved in nor exposed to any sex trafficking activities he may have been a part of.
Shuliak might be holding American citizenship, or at least a green card, after an apparently bogus marriage in 2013 with Jennifer Kalin, a longtime associate of Epstein. A source told the Daily Mail that this was a ploy to enable the woman to remain in the US. Shuliak and Epstein reportedly often moved between his private island in the Virgin Islands, his New Mexico ranch, and his palatial Manhattan mansion. The source noted how he lived "by the season in different places — in summer the two of them, Epstein and Karyna, lived on his ranch in New Mexico."
Shuliak was seen in photos from January 2016 wearing a white puffer jacket outside Epstein's $75 million New York mansion, albeit she wasn't identified at the time. In June that year, she was seen entering and leaving the townhouse with a couple of Epstein's close associates, including Susan Hamblin. According to the Daily Mail, the same day former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barack was seen entering and exiting the property.
