Who was Alyssa Ortman? Lawmaker Janet Bewley’s car involved in crash that killed mom and daughter, 5
ASHLAND, WISCONSIN: State Senator Janet Bewley of Mason has found herself engulfed in controversy after becoming involved in a deadly car accident. Bewley, who apparently had a cataract surgery on July 21, was driving last Friday, July 22, when she reportedly came in the path of another car on Highway 2.
The fatal accident happened as Bewley was getting her vehicle out of the Maslowski Beach parking area, Ashland Police Department said Monday, July 25. Her car collided with the vehicle driven by 27-year-old Alyssa Ortman from Clearfield, Pennsylvania, who was with her daughter Khaleesi, 5. The Ashland Daily Press reported that “when the two collided, Ortman’s car spun across the highway and was hit by another vehicle driven by Jodi Munson, 45, of Mason.”

Following the freak crash, Ortman was reportedly taken to the hospital, where she breathed her last, while her child succumbed to her injuries on the spot. Ashland Police Chief Bill Hagstrom said that the 70-year-old lawmaker did not get hurt in the accident before noting no charges have been filed or recommended against anyone in the case as “the State Patrol reconstructs the incident.”
Hagstrom added: “We’ll be sitting down with them and going over everything as far as determining how it all actually happened. Then we’ll forward everything to the district attorney for their review because it was a fatal accident.”
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Bewley’s office issued a statement saying, “Senator Bewley was involved in a three-vehicle accident in Ashland, Wisconsin on Friday, July 22nd. Tragically, two people lost their lives. This is a heartbreaking event for the community. Our thoughts and prayers are focused on the individuals involved, their families and their loved ones.”
“Senator Bewley, who was not seriously injured in the accident, wants to thank all the dedicated law enforcement and emergency medical personnel who helped in the aftermath of the accident. A police investigation is ongoing. Out of respect for that investigation and the privacy of all the families involved, our office will be withholding further comment at this time. Thank you for your patience and concern,” it concluded.
