KENT COUNTY, MICHIGAN: A Michigan man upset over state-ordered Covid-19 restrictions was sentenced to just over six years in prison on Wednesday, August 25, for planning to kidnap Michigan Governor, Gretchen Whitmer.

Ty Garbin, who admitted that he was part of a scheme to kidnap Whitmer after he and a half-dozen others were arrested in October 2020, was the first of six alleged conspirators charged in the case to plead guilty. The group of would-be kidnappers, who named themselves the “Wolverine Watchmen,” were busted before pulling off the plan to kidnap Whitmer from her vacation home to protest her strict Covid-19 pandemic mandates and policies. The group was infiltrated by a crew of FBI sources, according to authorities.

Who is Ty Garbin?

Garbin, who copped a plea in January 2021, will testify against his alleged cohorts as a “star witness.” At his sentence hearing on Wednesday, Garbin himself apologized to Whitmer, who was not in the courtroom, and her family for his involvement. “I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of stress and fear her family felt because of my actions. And for that I am truly sorry,” the 25-year-old aviation mechanic told the judge.

Prosecutors have said that Garbin conspired with Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta, who "were members of the Wolverine Watchmen, a Michigan-based self-styled 'militia' group." The group accumulated weapons, participated in field training in Wisconsin and conducted surveillance of Whitmer's vacation home last year. The trial for the other five men facing federal charges is set to begin on October 12, 2021. In his plea agreement, Garbin revealed that the six men trained at his property near Luther, Michigan, constructing a "shoot house" to resemble Whitmer's vacation home and "assaulting it with firearms."

Whitmer, who is a Democrat, came under fire by right-wing groups after mandating strict social distancing and business restrictions amid the Covid-19 pandemic. She remained resistant in the wake of the botched kidnap plot. “The plots and threats against me, no matter how disturbing, could not deter me from doing everything I could to save as many lives as possible by listening to medical and health experts,” she said in June. “To me, it is very simple,” she said. “This had to be the priority.”

When the kidnapping case was filed in October, Whitmer had blamed then-president Trump for inspiring extremists across the US. Whitmer wrote a victim impact statement to the judge, saying, "things will never be the same."

"Threats continue," she said in June. "I have looked out my windows and seen large groups of heavily armed people within 30 yards of my home. I have seen myself hung in effigy. Days ago at a demonstration there was a sign that called for 'burning the witch.'"
