Who is Necla Camuz?
Necla Camuz, a 33-year-old citizen of southern Turkey's Hatay province welcomed her baby boy Yagiz on January 27. On February 6, just 10 days after Yagiz's birth, while Necla was feeding him, a 7.8-magnitude quake hit the country.
"When the earthquake started, I wanted to go to my husband who was in the other room, and he wanted to do the same thing. But as he tried to come to me with our other son, the wardrobe fell onto them and it was impossible for them to move. As the earthquake got bigger, the wall fell, the room was shaking, and the building was changing position. When it stopped, I didn't realize that I had fallen one floor down. I shouted their names but there was no answer," Necla stated in an interview with BBC.
Necla, who remained buried in the rubble for almost four days managed to breastfeed her son but struggled to find food or water for herself. In desperation, she tried to drink her own breast milk but could not do so. Necla was rescued after 90 hours by Istanbul Municipality Fire Department's rescue team. When she arrived at the hospital, Necla was greeted by her husband Irfan and their 3-year-old son Yigit.
More survivors of the earthquake
On February 12, the rescue team pulled out a seven-month-old baby from the rubble, almost 139 hours after the earthquake. Another 12-year-old girl, Cudie, was also rescued after being trapped for 147 hours. A 13-year-old was saved in Gaziantep, according to a CNN report. A Twitter user shared a video of a woman being pulled out from the debris with the caption, "The rescue forces do not want to stop looking for people alive among the rubble, a young woman is taken out alive a week after the earthquake. #Turquia #Turkey #TurkeyQuake."
