The assault took place at his home in the capital. Although the Texas Democrat Representative was not harmed, his white Honda CHR with Texas plates was stolen.

A statement released by Cuellar's chief of staff Jacob Hochberg read, "As Congressman Cuellar was parking his car this evening, 3 armed assailants approached the Congressman and stole his vehicle. Luckily, he was not harmed and is working with local law enforcement."

The incident took place at 9.30 pm at New Jersey Avenue and K Street SE in Washington's Navy Yard area, about a mile from the US Capitol.

Henry Cuellar wanted illegal migrants deported

Congressman Cuellar had demanded 'repercussions' for illegal migrants in September, in the wake of a fresh surge of border crossings.

In the fiscal year of 2023, which ended in September, border crossings were on track to surpass that of 2022 after figures showed an uptick of 50,000 in apprehensions in the month of August.

"We need to have repercussions at the border. What does that mean? You've got to deport people, and you've got to show images of people being deported," the Congressman had said to Fox News.

"When was the last time we saw people going the other way instead of just seeing people flow in?"

Cuellar, who claims to be a 'moderate' Democrat represents a region along the border that encompasses San Antonio.

According to him, neither the current President Joe Biden nor former POTUS Donald Trump have concrete plans to solve the problem.

Henry Cuellar asks government to seek counsel of community leaders

Speaking to Fox News host Bill Hemmer, Cuellar said, "I think Trump went too much to the right by doing the separation of families and kids, and then I think President Biden, the administration, is not doing enough."

He added, "We've got (to) find the right balance. You've got to listen to the community leaders."

In his opinion, the United States needed to convince Mexico to step up and secure its own borders to stop migrants before they reach the US border.

"I've been saying this for years, we as Democrats and Republicans can continue playing defense on the 1-yard line, or we can play defense on their 20-yard line... and that is getting Mexico to do more," he added.
