LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In the ever-evolving landscape of the coronavirus pandemic, new sub-variants continue to emerge, reshaping the course of global responses to the threat.

Since 2020, each sub-variant of the coronavirus has revealed its own unique genetic makeup, which, in turn, had potential implications for public health.

Several weeks ago, the UK's Health Security Agency made a significant announcement that has caught the attention of health experts and the public alike.

A new Omicron sub-variant, EG.5, was identified and subsequently named Eris.

Eris takes center stage

Eris, also known as EG.5, has swiftly become a focal point in the ongoing battle against the pandemic.

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that Eris has become the dominant sub-variant in the United States, surpassing the previously prominent sub-variant XBB.1.16, known as "Arcturus."

The rise of Eris is noteworthy due to its novel spike protein mutations, which experts believe could contribute to its heightened transmissibility.

Eris's emergence is not without intrigue, as health authorities and researchers delve into the characteristics that define this new sub-variant.

Named after the Greek goddess of discord and strife, Eris's moniker aptly reflects its potential to stir up turmoil in the realm of public health.

Who is Eris?

Eris's connection to Greek mythology lends an intriguing layer to the sub-variant's identity.

In Greek mythology, Eris is a figure synonymous with discord and strife. She is known for her role in the creation of the Golden Apple of Discord, the catalyst for the Trojan War.

Eris's tumultuous nature and her ability to sow chaos are reflective of the challenges posed by the sub-variant bearing her name.

In mythology, she is often portrayed as a troublemaker, avoided by many gods and goddesses. Her brother Ares, the god of war, is one of the few who tolerate her presence, often partnering with her in battles.

In Greek mythology, her presence is marked by upheaval and disharmony. Eris's nature is reflected in her mythological interactions, where she often stirs up trouble and foments conflict among not just humans but the gods as well, according to the World History Encyclopedia.

Monitoring and preparing

As the world grapples with Eris' onslaught, there's a new player on the horizon already — BA.2.86, also known as Pirola.

This Pirola sub-variant, while still relatively limited in terms of confirmed cases worldwide, has garnered attention due to its ability to evade immune responses more effectively than its predecessors.

Pirola's ability to overcome individuals' existing immunities could pose a significant challenge to public health efforts to control the pandemic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently designated Eris, or EG.5, as a "variant of interest."

This classification underscores the need for vigilance and monitoring as the scientific community seeks to comprehend the sub-variant's behavior and impact on the world's population.

Eris traces its lineage back to the Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.9.2 and features a notable mutation that aids in evading antibodies developed from previous infections and vaccinations.

While Eris is not currently associated with more severe symptoms compared to earlier Omicron sub-variants, its potential impact remains uncertain. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and immunocompromised, could be at greater risk of severe illness if exposed to Eris.

Vaccine development for Eris sub-variant

The perpetual mutation of the coronavirus complicates vaccine development efforts, leading to a constant race to stay ahead of the virus. The emergence of sub-variants like Eris emphasizes the challenges in maintaining an effective response.

Upcoming vaccines targeted at specific sub-variants, including Kraken (XBB.1.5), are expected to offer enhanced protection against severe illness.

However, the efficacy of these vaccines against Pirola remains uncertain. Doctors are struggling in this game of catch-up between vaccine development and virus evolution.

Amidst the surge of Eris and the potential emergence of Pirola, staying informed remains paramount. The rise of Eris has led to increased case growth and hospitalization rates in the U.S., reinforcing the need for collective awareness and vigilance.

While vaccines continue to play a crucial role in preventing severe illness, the evolving nature of the virus necessitates adaptable strategies.

Public health officials worldwide advocate for booster shots among at-risk populations, ensuring that protection remains robust, Forbes reported.
